Suggestion for platinum membership solely in exchange for BrowniZ

As I am posting this topic, I have feelings bubbling within me. For a start, I feel elated that the Tamil version of ProZ is coming along nicely and I feel proud of it as the work is being carried out by just 3 of us, namely, K.Ponnan, Guna and yours truly, Narasimhan Raghavan. Thanks to the activity, I have increased my BrowniZ tally to 49,530 (of which the ativity in question gave me around 47000 points).

I joined ProZ as a basic member in Feb 2003 and have remained so till date. I am now being approached to upgrade to platinum membership making use of discount for 4000 points. Previously it used to be 6000 BrowniZ and 60 USD. Even at that time I was wistfully thinking that were the full discount offered for 12000 points, I would endeavour to do so. But it just remained wishful thinking.

Now there is a radical change in the scene. I have BrowniZ enough for 4 years, if full discount is offered. Why not? The idea is not far-fetched. There is another translator portal (I suppose mentioning the name of other portals is frowned upon by Forum rules, hence I will not do so), in which I am full-fledged member for the past more than 18 months, on some similar concession. I contribute an article to the portal on various aspects of translation and if it is accepted, I am offered 2 months' free membership. I am quite happy with that arrangement. The portal too is happy, as they enrich their database with good articles.

Let us come back to ProZ. Strictly speaking, what attractions do BrowniZ have for a person, who has already got the platinum membership on payment? I feel that the real BrowniZ earners are non-members, who can use them for seeing Blue Board, quote for jobs and so on. As such, the platinum members are listed even before the ordinary members with the maximum of KudoZ and Brownies points. It will be interesting to note actual figures from ProZ database about BrowniZ and KudoZ holders.

They say that paying membership fees is a way of repaying the site. Yes, of course, but in the case of an ordinary member taking active part in KudoZ and other site activities, he too renders service in so many tangible and intangible ways. In fact, it will be in ProZ's interest to encourage both. After all a person spending 12,000 points for full membership has alerady done the service and he will continue to do so.

I don't know how this post will be received by others. My way is clear. If the full conversion is not allowed, I am content to retain the status quo. After all, being a member with VID, my forum postings need not await vetting. With sizeable KudoZ points, I already have some options in the matter of KudoZ questions. As for the possibility of asking more KudoZ questions per day, my record shows that my ratio of number of questions asked to the number of questions is very low indeed. As for job postings, I get to quote for translation jobs in real time from my other portal. As for Blue Board access, I have enough BrowniZ with me to get access to at least 1000 records. So, I am well off as such.

However, I feel that my suggestion for full conversion of BrowniZ merits serious consideration on the part of Proz management. In such a scenario, they will have people like me continuing to be active in many ProZ activities at least for the purpose of earning 12000 BrowniZ per year.

Regards,
N.Raghavan

Perfectly logic Jul 4, 2007

Nothing to add to your post. It seems perfectly logic from every point of view.

Talking of logic, I have forgotten to add one thing Jul 4, 2007

The above points were represented by me in reply to the ProZ campaign for membership ended 30.06.2007. But they were sent as reply to the private message I received in this connection. I am yet to get reply, one way or the other.

So I wonder. I am curious to know the frank views of all concerned.

As far as I am concerned, I am ready for all eventualities. Even should nothing come out of my suggestion, I am - as already mentioned - quite well off.

In this connection, a query. As of now, once I get access to a BB record, it remains for ever accessible to me. Can the same thing be applicable in the case of a platinum member, who has full access to all BB records and then becomes ordinary member for one reason or another?

My proposal has this as base. I believe in earning something and then paying from it for some other things. This is the only way, as I see it.

Regards,
N.Raghavan

Special BrowniZ-based offers are periodically made Jul 4, 2007

Hi Narasimhan,

No modification of the current policy regarding Browniz-based membership discounts is in the books, but special offers are periodically made during membership campaigns targeting users and members with large amounts of Browniz.

Regards,
Enrique

If I get membership on my terms, OK, but if not, that too is OK.

General vs. specific Jul 4, 2007

I'm not sure if I agree in principle to full payment of membership through Browniz (not that I particularly care one way or another!).
However, in your specific case (and that of anyone else in a similar situation), where you have made a very tangible contribution to the site's improvement, I think it would be perfectly reasonable to "pay" you for your services with platinum membership rather than with browniz.

Against it Jul 4, 2007

BrownieZ are easily learned during one day spent online at the site: just send agree to any closed answers, add some entries automatically to the ProZ glossaries or do anything else. A discount - yes, it sounds OK, but only as partial payment. This site and these people who work hard over improving it need more than your simple participation. In any case, a good job found thank to ProZ pays much more than the yearly membership fee.

If you have too many brownieZ, you may spend it usefully - consider Text Ads, which are probably a nice way to increase your visibility.

Couldn't agree more. Jul 4, 2007

And have nothing to add to the eloquent discourse.

If you have BrowniZ in your 'bank' why couldn't you use it to purchase a membership, full platinum or partial. That would be perfectly fine with me. I think that it would also give more folks an incentive to participate more in the site. In all aspects this would be a win-win situation.

IMHO in this particular case this particular person (Narasimhan) would be a very valuable platinum member and asset to ProZ.

Perhaps something to think about ProZ staff. It certainly has my vote.

Your suggestion is good, Kirill Jul 4, 2007

Of course yes. In that way I am comfortably placed. I may yet do it, provided I feel that it is useful.

By the way, as I go on posting the replies here, I am using the Tamil version of the forum page and I am thrilled to see the field descriptions that were translated by me.

We all are valuable members, be us platinum or not. As Narasimhan, I was one of the ProZ localizer to my native language. I did it not because I wanted any special benefits, I just wanted to help the site as I can.

Next, I strongly believe that for a while the best help we can do for for the site is our money. ProZ.com is probably well-established enough, still it does not seem to be as rich as Microsoft. When its income obviously hits the margin of "rich" I will be the first one who asks for my share.

Next again, earning kilos of brownieZ is too easy. Whenever allowing it to one person, ProZ.com is ruined. BrownieZ is something which you accumulate for free, and very easily. KudoZ points are much more difficult to gain, but even kudoZ are too easy to gain. Even if ProZ decides to provide a free membership for browniez, I suppose it should be millions of brownies, not those pityful thousands.

What is a Text Ad, and how does one buy one?

Text Ads Jul 4, 2007

Hi Amy

From the main ProZ page, select "My ProZ.com" at the upper menu, then "My text ads". There, you may pay 4000 brownieZ to be exposed 400 times at the field of your choice. I believe you will find further explanations and help at the page. I'm not sure the feature works great, but it's supposed to be helpful to make yourself more visible to potential clients. As stated, your text ad will have a nice chance to show up at the page when a client is seeking for a suitable translator. I cannot really say if it works. In any case, it's a nice way to get rid of extra brownieZ

Hi Amy,

Here are a few FAQ that may help you understand how the Text Ads feature works.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Mihai and Hester. I'm not a member of ProZ at the moment, but I may rejoin when I move back to the USA this year. Then I'll look into text ads. Thanks for the info.

Amy
