That\'s an easy one. They come from off the street. I believe, as I have said before, that the answer to most of our problems is to raise the qualifications for becoming a ProZ member above the possession of a valid email address. As long as anyone and his dog can register, we\'re going to have trouble. ▲ Collapse

Jon Zuber: As long as anyone and his dog can register, we\'re going to have trouble.

Actually, when I registered, I used my dog\'s name (Amara), so you\'re right!!!

But, on a more serious note:

But, on a more serious note:

Werner Patels: ProZ must implement some kind of feature that bars members from answering questions in language pairs that are not their working languages. I agree with John: this kind of practice belittles the KudoZ system and confuses the asker (unfortunately, as John pointed out, some askers fall into the traps set up by those \"colleagues\" and choose inadequate answers).

This is another incidence of site abuse potentially damaging to the system. Lots of us only work in one pair (my case), but I answer questions that are included in my profile as \"interest\", and it is interest. I have no intention of working in these pairs, but perhaps I (and many others) have something interesting to say. If the system worked (and it would, but for abuse), if our answers were ridiculous, or not good enough, we wouldn\'t get any agrees. It would be a great pity if I could no longer answer these questions, which, if I have time, I enjoy doing. On the other hand, I agree that answering a question concerning Hebrew (for example), when you don\'t actually speak the language and have no training in it whatsoever is ridiculous. However, I don\'t think (as Jon Zuber suggested) that this would lead to people creating another profile just to answer questions that they don\'t work in. The point of answering any question going is to be in the top ten in the last whatever. And get your name listed on the main page. So, there\'s no point in having lots of different profiles. Which is why Jon Zuber\'s suggestion:

How about awarding points only in answerers\' working pairs?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That would prevent some from answering questions all over the map just for the points, while allowing others to answer outside their pairs to be helpful. It would be in keeping with the idea of KudoZ as demonstration of expertise, because our working pairs are where we need it.

is a very valid point. Perhaps there could be a new feature that indicates to the asker whether the person answering has listed the pair as work, interest, or not at all.

Going back to Patricia\'s original posting in this forum (concerning Salto\'s postings in the ES-EN community -by the way, have you clicked that the name chosen, Salto (jump), is perfect for leaping all over the place and posting a new profile to keep asking questions!!!!), of course we\'re going to keep on answering questions with the new feature of only two agrees and you get the points two weeks later. While some of the questions posted have been extremely easy, others have required some thought and are well worth being in the glossary. To squash or not to squash, that is the question. And it is often not an easy one. Many of you in \"my\" community will remember the \"abuso\" question I posted (at that time, I didn\'t have squash rights) on an obvious abuse of the system, but even then, I don\'t know if I would have dared squash without knowing that I had backing. Should there be a \"restore question\" option, in case anyone disagrees???

Leniocio & De Vries\' suggestion:

Maybe it would be an idea to use a \"hit rate\" in addition to, or somehow combined with the KudoZ score. With \"hit rate\" I mean the number of answers someone has posted compared to the number of answers that were chosen by the poster.

Leniocio & De Vries: However, if next to the number of KudoZ someone has earned you can see how often his or her answers are chosen on average (preferable for a specific language combination), you get a clearer idea on what these KudoZ actually say about this person. And when people reach higher KudoZ ratings, the ratio I suggest to add will be more and more significant, since the \'luck\' element will be averaged out.

This is an excellent suggestion. However, in my experience, the more KudoZ a person has, the more likely they are to get agrees and the points, despite the fact that (in my humble opinion) their answers are not necessarily correct for specific questions.

I have read these postings and my jaw is about to hit the floor...I guess I shouldn\'t be surprised that some people would do things like the ones mentioned (making fake profiles to get an entire document translated, etc.); nevertheless I sit here appalled at their audacity and nerve.

I for one, sign on periodically and am not very aware of who has been asking a multitude of questions, I do not check the asker\'s profile very often, in short...I\'m not as involved as many of you are. Having said that... of course I was one of the fools who answered some of the questions being unaware of the asker\'s intentions. I understand that decorum must be maintained and that is why the questions were squashed instead of confronting the person. However, I wish someone would have said something earlier, it would have saved me a lot of trouble and made me aware of what is going on sooner.

Personally, I can be tactful when need be...but when there is a clear pattern of abuse by someone I tend to just speak my mind. That is what I\'m going to do next time I see a question posed by one of these buffoons.

Cheers!

How to stop site abuse Jan 17, 2002

It might be a good idea to limit the number of questions asked within a certain period of time, let\'s say, within the same day.

I also think it is a good idea to remove those with empty profiles.

I am new in this site, even though I have a few years of experience. I am shocked to read that some people are getting points by answering or grading in fields or languages they don\'t know. Is there a way to set a firewall for those languages you are not quali

I too think empty profiles should be squashed, and to be a proZ member, everybody should indicate a valid e-mail address in his/her profile.

Moreover: like some websites say \"specify your…, maximum 100 words\", proZ registration should say \"indicate your background/specialisation, MINIMUM 50 words\" - who is too lazy to write that much, is not serious enough for proZ!

3. Then check to see whether they earned lots of points by suggesting translations into some other language(s).

4. Choose an area in that language in which they have earned lots of points (say, Technology). Click on the number of points.

5. See how many of their answers were chosen.

6. Look through some answers that were chosen, and some other answers that were not chosen; chances are you\'ll find in the table some suggestions that you consider absurd.

7. Make a note of how many of those people are moderators, or make a lot of noise in some other way.

You may be surprised by the results.
