The BSO system seems to me another compromise. I don\'t understand why ProZ\'s founder is unable to implement simple but effective solutions for the site. The BSO system is far too generic to be satisfactory, and categories like marketing and advertising are missing, just to make an example. Do we really need to use such an extravagant system? Woldn\'t be better to tell a programmer to design a page with a 100 categories and 10 subcategories each in a dropdown menu? Is it that difficult? I don\'t think so. Seems to me that the BSO system is totally detached from what us translators really need: a simple and effective system which allows us to select our fields of expertise.

A disappointed Giovanni

You're right! Feb 18, 2003

Unfortunately, I have to agree with you.

- No marketing, PR, advertising, market research

-No business, finance, accounting, banking, insurance, human resources

- No food & drink, tourism, music

Science/technical subjects however can be found in intricate detail:crystallogy, metrology, umpteen fields for engineering.

Obviously, BSO is a step in the right direction but unfortunately, we have not yet arrived at the desired destination!

Greetings

Nicole

Let's try and be positive! Feb 18, 2003

The BSO system is not bad. What we are dealing with now is the \'restricted\' number of categories chosen from the BSO to be added to Proz.

If you have a look at the complete list (at the BSO link provided), you will see that it is very comprehensive.

Why cannot we suggest the addition of other categories to Henry and his collegues?

We all have our \"specialties\" and I hope they can all be listed. In any case - whatever they are - they can still go under a broader definition, and be explained somewhere else.

Personally, I would like to know if there is/ will be a limit in the number of fields that can be chosen.

One final comment: I believe we should all contribute with some criticism and some suggestions, criticism alone was never a good way of tackling a problem.

I value Proz.com ability to change and improve very much.

Keep up the good work and see if you can accomodate some requests from us folks.

P.S. Should we start a list of subjects/ sub-subjects to be added?

Ciao.

just found out.... Feb 18, 2003

I just had a look at the full BSO system (on the net) and it is indeed a very comprehensive method of \"knowledge ordering\". Why not implement the full system then? That would solve the problem. Here\'s the link. You make your own mind up...

Let's use the BSO as it is - there is no perfect system anyway Feb 18, 2003

Hello,

every system of categories, every classification has its strengths and weaknesses. There is no system which comes even close to being perfect. There is no system which serves all needs.

Many philosophers have tried to find the perfect system. They have all failed. But they have not failed because they were not intelligent enough, they have failed for deeper philosophical reasons: Knowledge itself is not a collection of \'knowledge atoms\', but a complex system of skills and information. And the categories to describe knowledge are also complex.

Therefore, I would suggest that we just use the BSO system as it is now. If we start to discuss each category we will never stop. It\'s true, the categories are very broad, but if we add further categories or sub-categories, the system will become complicated and it will not be used. And a classification which is not used is just senseless.

Hermann

P.S. You\'ve got to throw away the ladder after you have climbed it...

Half baked? No doubt. Feb 18, 2003

Until now, we have had just 8 categories. On balance, they have worked for our purposes.

Now, we add the most generalized layer of a more complete system. This is not a complete or final solution, just a step in the right direction.

After some weeks or months in practice, we will look into the matter of what additional categories should be added from more detailed tiers of the BSO system.

It is indeed limited Feb 18, 2003

I agree, and seems more detailed for sciences than arts and humanities. I use it when I can, but have found many times I must leave it, considering the type of texts I usually translate.

There is always room for improvement. It is a step in the right direction, Henry. It just needs tweaking, like everything else in this imperfect world.

I thank you for your efforts in making Proz even better.

Nancy
