Hello again, The reply to your support request was that notifications are leaving ProZ.com servers, not that you are now receiving notifications. It is important to make that difference, because there is no way site staff can tell why you are not receiving the notifications that are sent to your email address. We simply cannot track that kind of information. Though, I cannot say why you were not receiving notifications to your previous email address, I can make an informed guess. Considering there are no known issues with delivery to Gmail addresses and you started receiving notifications right away when you changed you email address, I will recommend you to check any filters you may have on your account. They may be redirecting notifications to places other than your inbox, causing you to miss them. Also, could you try making a search for "ProZ.com" on your Gmail inbox and broaden your search after receiving the first batch of results? That will find notifications from ProZ.com, if you are receiving them, wherever they may be. Please let me know if you find any. Best regards, Alejandro ▲ Collapse | |

Best regards, Alejandro Sorry Alejandro, I'm afraid you've lost me but please do explain as this could be helpful for the others who were only receiving intermittent notifications. I use Outlook to pick up my mail, there's a Spam folder and messages only go in there once in a blue moon. I've checked the filters on the Gmail site itself and I have none set. I also did a search on ProZ in my Inbox, last message was 30 Oct. Edited to add: Got you now. Just went to Gmail site and found messages from beginning of November in my Spam folder there (a folder that I didn't even know existed). Have indeed changed filters to allow any messages from ProZ, I think I can do without the Viagra ones Thanks for your help Alejandro!

I am using gmail. But let me tell you that before gmail I was using yahoo for proz and I had similar email problems about 3 years ago. If I remember well I was suggested to change my email provider. So I changed from yahoo to gmail. Now the same email issues occur with gmail... Anybody else with gmail or with totally different email providers?

Hi Katalin Like you I had problems with a Yahoo-based email account a couple of years ago. Yahoo blamed ProZ and ProZ blamed Yahoo for the problems, which were mainly with KudoZ-related notifications, apparently because of bulk mailing lists being filtered out before the emails got anywhere near my account. They did not go to a spam or junk folder as in Lisa's case - I simply did not receive them at all. The only thing that the staff could suggest was that I change my email provider. I rather reluctantly set up a Hotmail account to use purely for ProZ. This worked well for 16 months - until 2 days ago, when I once again stopped receiving KudoZ notifications. A change of filtering policy by Hotmail? A different address being used by ProZ to send out some notifications? I submitted a support request, but the staff response was to say that the emails are definitely leaving their servers and that I should provide another email address ... I wish you luck with this; I am afraid I am very close to giving up. Alison ▲ Collapse | | | Thanks for your reply, Alison | Dec 1, 2011 |

I really doubt that it would be connected with Hotmail, because exactly 2 days ago I found out the first anomaly, when I didn't receive notifications... and also a colleague of mine didn't receive notifications that day and he doesn't use Hotmail. I don't think we should give it up if this is a technical issue connected to the site. At least many of us are paying for this service, plus changing email providers all the time is not a solution ... I hope other site users will give more information to solve this issue. Regards, Katalin

Use ProZ.com hosting | Dec 2, 2011 |
I am using ProZ.com's hosting service that is free with paid full membership. I take advantage of the email service and also the FTP site. I have various options to control spam, and my notifications are always there. I believe you don't have to buy your own domain name, you can use one that proz offers. Perhaps something to consider. | | | I don't think that the problem lies in email providers | Dec 2, 2011 |
Thank you for your suggestion, Katalin. But I doubt that the problem lies in email providers. Different people are using different email providers. As you see I am not the only member/user who experienced this. For example Alison indicated that she used Yahoo previously then she changed to Hotmail and exactly that day when I experienced this email notification problem, Alison also experienced it. The common thing is that these notifications are being sent out to a lot of people at the same time. I am receiving many notifications from ProZ.com: KudoZ questions, peer comments, Discussion entries, forum posts, jobs, etc. These emails all have a very similar structure, starting with nearly identical Subject lines, so they are excellent candidates for any spam filter to categorize them as spam. As it was pointed out in previous threads and in this one, too, I believe, it is often the case that the emails do leave the ProZ servers OK, as they supposed to do, but they don't arrive to the recipient (whose email is hosted at a different ISP), they get "lost" in between. This can be for two reasons: one is when the individual email is categorized as spam/junk and gets caught in the ISP's spam/junk filter. (See the story a few posts above about the gmail spam folder that was holding emails hostage.) The other reason for not receiving the emails could be that the ISP "blacklists" the sending IP address (the ProZ mail server address), in other words the ISP puts it on a list of untrusted senders. I did run into this problem once, almost 3 years ago, the post you linked in is about that issue. The reply from staff (Andrew) in that linked thread gives a very detailed and logical explanation of why blacklisting happens. You can also see that it was resolved pretty much right away. I have not had that problem since. I believe both Gmail and Hotmail are very large providers that take significant steps to fight spam and protect their users, so they are likely to use these techniques, and sometimes they update, change their filtering methods. So are other ISPs, it is pretty much standard these days, that's why users experience similar issues, regardless of which ISP they use. My point was that if you use a ProZ.com hosted email, and receive your ProZ.com notifications there, the chance of those notifications being considered spam/junk are pretty low, and so is the chance of ProZ.com blacklisting its own server... (At least this is what my logic says.) I have other email addresses at other ISPs, not only the ProZ.com hosted one, not only because I like to separate work emails from personal emails, but also because it is good to have a "backup" in case of a technical problem with my main email. But I use the ProZ email to all communication with ProZ.com, as I think this is the shortest way for the information to travel. More steps in the process mean more chances for the information to get lost. I think using the site email is a simple solution, you would get your site notifications (KudoZ, jobs, forums, etc.) there. After receiving the initial contact from a potential client at your ProZ email, you can always switch to your other email, if you prefer that, and continue the direct communication with the client from there.
