I hope that this is the correct place to ask this, but my directory ranking in my language pair (Spanish-English) has remained unchanged despite having obtained 8 Kudoz points in the last week or so. As far as I can tell, they were both Pro-level questions....

Any help appreciated!

two questions to affect your ranking in Spanish to English. It might be different in Hindi to Icelandic.

8 vs. 26000+ Dec 21, 2016

The leader of the Sp-En Kudoz list has over 26000 points.

I know, I know, will take a looong time but... Dec 21, 2016

..before I got the points, it said (for my specific specialities), "your ranking is XXX, with 4 points more, it will be YYYY". However, after getting said 4 points, it did not change and was exactly as it had been when I had no points, and when I got 4 more points, neither....So, what I am wondering is why my ranking has not changed as it indicated it would (however far down the list I may be, etc)...Thanks!

The "with X more points your rank would be" is, of course, just a snapshot of one moment in time (mind that it says "would", not "will"). By the time you have those extra four points the people in front of you (or even the ones behind you) might have collected more points and stayed ahead of you (or even overtaken you).

It does take time.

Thanks Dec 21, 2016

I imagined that was the reason, but what led me to ask the question was that the ranking was exactly the same without changing whatsoever, from before I had any points and after obtaining points. In short, just wanted to get an idea how it works, thanks for all your replies!

"Update point totals now (slow)" Dec 21, 2016

Maybe it's not your case, if several days have already passed, but have you tried "Update point totals now (slow)" in the "KudoZ activity" window?

Yes, they were all Pro-level points:
http://www.proz.com/profile/1316567?popup=kudoz

I did a search for English-Spanish translators, and since you're a paying member, I expected to see you on roughly page 23, page 24 or page 25 of the list of translators, but I don't see you there. I don't see you there. I don't. So I think you should contact ProZ.com support and ask why you are not on the directory search result.

And since you are native English, and Spanish-English is among your top 3 pairs, and one of your specialisms is "Finance (general), and you have 4 points in "Finance (general)", I expected to see you on page 4 or 5 of such a search, but... you're not there. Theoretically, you can get to page 2 of "Finance (general)" if you get 13 points in that field.

You should be on page 6 or 7 for the specialism "Business/Finance", since you have 4 points in that field as well, but you're not there either. You should be able to bump up to page 5 if you get 13 points in that field. To get to page 2 in that field (with the other parameters mentioned above), you'd need 55 points in that field.

Hello Isa,

Sorry to intrude here. From your description it looks like you were using the "My directory ranking" tool to figure out your position in the directory. Note that this tool takes into consideration a certain language pair and a specific field of expertise in order to calculate your position in the directory.

The directory is set up in such a way that the more KudoZ PRO points you have in a language pair and specific field, the higher you will appear in the directory for searches made in that pair and in that field. Results are calculated first by points in that field, then by points in that pair. The "My directory ranking" tool prompts you to answer questions in a specific language pair and area of expertise in order to move up in the directory for that particular search ("Earn KudoZ PRO points in [language pair] + [specific field] and boost your exposure to clients in the directory now!"). So, my guess is that you are checking your directory ranking for a specific field in which you do not yet have any KudoZ points, so your directory ranking for that search more or less stayed the same.

In other words, your ranking for directory searches in Spanish to English in the field of "Law: Taxation & Customs" would not have changed much with your new 8 KudoZ PRO points, as the points you've received are related to the fields of "Finance (general)" and "Other": http://www.proz.com/profile/1316567?popup=kudoz

This is just a guess, so if you could provide me with the specific criteria you are using in the "My directory tool", I can take a look and make sure if everything's working as it should. You can submit that via support request.

Thanks!

Best regards,

Maria
