Question about course Jun 15, 2010

I would like to know if this course is only for beginner Project Managers or if a Project Manager of a small translation/interpretation agency would also benefit. I've been doing project management for 7 years in a small agency, but I would like to learn about additional skills.

You will learn what a PM must do, the how-to’s and the recommended tools Jun 15, 2010

This course is aimed at freelance translators who want to set up their own translation company
and freelance translators or new who want to work as project managers in a translation company and want to know the translation processes and industry.

It is not a merely "academic" course, instead, it's an attempt to transfer, in a fast and efficient way, practical knowledge of the translation industry and tools, from professional to professional, explaining what is the reality of everyday life of a translation PM, focusing on the prevention of problems, but especially on the abilities, tools and knowledge needed to solve them, when problems become inevitable. You will go over real case studies and learn the how-to’s and the recommended tools - from what you said this last point is where you could learn about additional skills.

Let me add that in this course you won't find any reference to Gantt charts, Pert, WBS, Six Sigma, Prince2 or any other "high-level" theorization about project management. These methods and tools cannot be taught in a short self-study course like this one. If you are really interested in this discipline and want to leverage your knowledge of project management, we recommend you to join your local PMI (Project Management Institute) http://www.pmi.org/ chapter, become a member and eventually get certified.

Hope this was of help. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have more questions.

Regards,

Soledad

Self-paced courses are conducted through ProZ.com eLearning platform Jun 28, 2010

Hi Lorena,

Good question. This course is conducted through ProZ.com's e-learning platform (Moodle)

In these courses you will find files, resources, manuals and guidelines, accompanied by video tutorials, questionnaires, assignments, forums, chats, tests and other eLearning tools to enhance learning experience.

Check out the platform here: http://www.proz.com/courseware/ - there's a demo course there for you to get an idea of what type of content and activities you can find in these courses.

Have a good evening.

Soledad

Questions Jun 30, 2010

Hi Soledad,

I have enrolled and paid this morning for this training and got access to the courseware, mainly the page entitled Topic outline.

Now, I have read everything that was contained in the different little blocks (from 1 to 9) and I have also completed and uploaded my assignments for the two case studies.

However, there is nothing after block 9 and after having uploaded the short assignments. Is that it?

I am not too sure because the overview stated that there was roughly 20 hours of study, and it took me only a couple of hours to read all the content on this page.

Also, could you please point me towards the video tutorials, questionnaires, tests and other eLearning tools as I could not find them.

Maybe I got it wrong and maybe there is an official start date to the course. In which case, it has not started yet...

Thank you for your help.

Regards,
Nathalie

QUESTION Jul 6, 2010

Hi Soledad,

I am very interested in the course. It says that it is self-paced but even being like that, is there a maximum time that could take us to do the course? I mean, for example during the week I have no time... so I would have to use the weekends, for example in 2 weekends I would have it done, but as there are also assignments, I don't know if there would be like an specific time to do that. Could you please clarify this?
Hope I explained myself...
Thanks in advance,

María

20 hours vs. 2 hours Jul 6, 2010

Hi Nathalie,

The contents for this course are distributed among the 9 blocks you can see on its main page. The calculated time needed to cover the course was a rough approximation. Of course, you can read all the contents in half a day, but then you should add the time needed to post your comments to the specific forums, the time for the case studies, etc. There are also a few reference sources that should give you further information about the subject. Depending on other feedback we will receive, we may modify the expected time.

Regarding multimedia content, there are no videos for this specific course.

Feel free to contact me if you need any further explanation.

Kind regards and thanks for attending the course

Marco

Hi María,

The course is meant to be attended anytime. There's no maximum time. Once you're enrolled you can access the content anytime, as far as I know.

As Nathalie pointed out, the expected hours needed to cover the course are probably miscalculated. However, I still think that it's better if you "digest" the contents in at least 2 days, not all at once.

Kind regards

Marco

Number of slots Aug 11, 2011

Hi,

I don't understand why there is a limited number of slots if this is self paced and you can access any time as long as it's during the timeframe.
Also when is the next session?

Thanks
