I just received this message from ProZ and I don´t know if I should laugh or cry.
The machine translation itself is not exceptionally horrible, but the writing is not something I would like to read. Honestly I am feeling a bit offended by being addressed this way (meaning the bad style). Isn´t ProZ supposed to be a website for language professionals?
Maybe I should send a support ticket and ask to be sent messages in ProZ´s official language only.
What do you think about being addressed by machine translated messages?
Daniel

Below is the message in "German":

Sehr geehrte Daniel Meier,

Same here! Oct 16, 2012

I had the same message and at first I thought it was some kind of prank. I already replied and asked - implored - the people responsible to make sure that only the highest standard of writing is used, even for internal communication.
There are so many native German speakers out here who would be happy to lend a hand.
In order to be appreciated by professionals, ProZ.com has to act professional itself.

Not machine translated Oct 16, 2012

Thanks for your feedback, Daniel and Usch.

The text was not machine translated. It was translated by a German native translator, but proper proofreading was not done.

I apologize for the oversight. The translation process for this type of texts will be reviewed to avoid this in the future.

Regards,

Soledad

Ouch! Oct 16, 2012

Looks like another good reason for verifying native language claims.
Or perhaps the person who translated this text shouldn't claim to be a translator after all.
At any rate, this is a rather shameful piece of communication for a professional translators' website.

Native German? Maybe... Oct 16, 2012

Looks like a native 17.5 years old and rather clueless German. It sounds kind of cute. Someone had so much work with it...

On one hand it is funny, on the other hand I really hope proz.com will not gamble its reputation away with mails like this one. I appreciate the work proz.com is doing and there are features on this site that have been incredibly useful for me so far. But don't go down the "0.01 $ - proofreaders are a waste of money" road. Too many others are doing it already.

I won't even comment on the fact that Proz, who follows the EN 15038 standard to check the qualifications of their Certified Pro program, does not follow the rest of this standard when producing a translation.

But this "native" speaker should definitely not work into German - I would rather use somebody who learned German in Bejing or Deli.

Clearly substandard Oct 16, 2012

Aside from the possibility that this piece may have been "produced" by a native speaker of German, the translation is clearly substandard in terms of spelling, grammar, register and writing skills, and reeks of an unprofessional approach.

Please do get it right next time - I fully agree with Anna's and Siegfried's comments. This shouldn't have happened at all: you never get a second chance to make a (good) first impression.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

OK, reading the text a second and third time, I admit it could be written by a person. At first sight the nature of some errors seemed like MT to me, for example

"Password" and "this page" not translated
Email, E-mail both incorrect in the same sentence etc.

However, if it is a human translation, the quality is unacceptable and IMO cannot be redeemed by proofreading.

Question to staff Nov 27, 2012

Question to Soledad or any other staff member:

Was this a paid or a voluntary translation?

Attila
