Final suggestions before new design becomes default?

ProZ.com has a new design that is clearer and easier for first-time visitors to understand.

If you have not yet tried it, you may do so by clicking on the link below the logo (upper left) that reads \"Switch to new design.\"

The new design will be made the default within a few days. You will be able to revert back to the old (current) design. However, this design will not be supported in the future.

Any final suggestions before the new design becomes the default would be welcome!

How about adding title properties to the main links? May 15, 2003

If you don\'t like drop down menus in the title bar and elsewhere (because of complications with DHTML, CSS & JavaScript) you could at least add HTML title properties (tool tip) to the links, so we can see the main link labels of the target pages on mouse-over without having to open them (or learning them by heart).

BTW: you can force line breaks in the tool tip by inserting the \\n character from a Unix script, not from Windows

Home page content May 15, 2003

I would move all information items:

- Info

- Site Map

- FAQ

- Support

from the About menu to the Home main menu.

All of them need to be aligned in design to the new look.

I would also suggest to add to the Home Page a menu item called \"What\'s new\", chronological and similar in structure to the current \"Site Status\", to log and provide a guide to all new features, as they are implemented.

That\'s in the \'Community\' section - you can either look for freelancers or agencies, or use the \'By name\' option to find someone by user name (or real name, provided that it\'s shown on-site).

HTH - Gruß Ralf

PS Sorry, that should read \"Directory\", of course, as indicated in the header of my posting.

Another problem is my need for an almost permanent interface with the \"Search Terms\" function. Am I the only one whom the new design throws into \"refresh\" everytime I click on \"back\"? I generally lose the page completely, have to go back to the homepage, and start all over instead of simply staying put in \"Search Terms\" to input a new search.

Can we also remove the language pairs by default that appear under \"Kudoz Search\"? I\'m speaking for those guys who have to move from one language combination to another. If I have 10 terms to look for in my main combinations (Sp/Fr>En), it\'s a bit of a pain to have to change the German>Tagalog default 10 times.

I support Harry_B's idea May 15, 2003

If it\'s not possible to have all the current links in the front page in the new design, at least some tool that enables us to see the contents of each item of the main menu would be of great help.

I have the same problem. Even though I am signed in with MSN and yahoo Messenger, it shows that I am not. As a coincidence, another member of my community just sent me a message stating the same thing...

It's under "jobs" May 16, 2003

At the top, click on \"jobs\", then on the left there is a link to the blue board.

why is practical = bad?? May 16, 2003

Why is it better to have to click several times - and wait much longer - to reach the \"easy\" KudoZ list etc etc instead of clicking just once, as in the old design?

Also extremely annoying: while you could use ProZ without having the blinking ads ruining your eyes and concentration just by scrolling a bit down, now with the new design you constantly see it!

I\'m flabbergasted: always ProZ has seemed to me a meetingplace of reasonable people, and now this! Please, please don\'t abolish the old design!

And green is ugly, and psychologically negative (I\'ve no time to find the links now, but I feel uncomfortable with it!)

Your sad Martin

Rate Calculation Feature and Proverb Section May 16, 2003

A rate calculation-feature like Aquarius might not be a bad idea (but without the cut-off feature given that this is prohibited by American legislation).

This feature could be made up of variables which take into account the following:

-------------------------------------------

Now translation rates are usually based upon the language-combination and what the outsourcer is willing to pay.

---

Wouldn\'t it be more practical to have the outsourcer mention a price-range taking into consideration the elements outlined hereinafter?

--

Would it be possible to attribute a numerical-value according to the difficulty level of the translation?

Some translations contain more vocabulary to be researched and more tables to be formatted =lower productivity per day.

It takes less time to translate a general text about say sociology than it takes to translate a text about nuclear plants.

-

I am a generalist (languages), who attended extra business and computer-courses, but

a friend of mine is obsessed by technology.

Why then shouldn\'t I offer translations about electronics, hydraulics and construction and work together with this friend? However, he wants to be paid too.

Can this be translated into a functional way of calculating a rate: for example :

Subject + Language combination plus rate of translator+rate of specialist+use of special tool (f.e.:AutoCad) =final rate

Based upon word-count a translator who translates from say the Romanic languages into Germanic languages (target-language count)can charge less than a translator who translates from Germanic languages into Romanic languages.

According to my colleagues a translator who translates from Germanic into Slavic wins a certain percentage.

I think the site-founder knows better whether you win or loose a percentage if you apply target-language count (E-J, J-E)?

The same must apply for Chinese(?) given that Japanese, Korean, Chinese belong to the same family?

What about an hourly rate for Power-Point presentations combined with the number of words in the presentation? If you go by word-count, PP-presentations do not earn that much due to shorter words used in such presentations?

The same is true for Excel worksheets

The use of \"special programs\" such as AutoCad, Framemaker, QuarkPress require an extra investment and extra skills.

The translator has to make an effort to buy the soft and aquire these skills.

Therefore, he or she must be rewarded for his effort.

Would it be possible to add a feature where you can add CAT-tool discount calculations?

(Thanks Joeri for your suggestion only to give discounts if the customers pay your licenses ).

If you introduce these variables into a matrix which translates into a final rate and couple this to the bidding system (cfr.Aquarius)you translate concerns and questions voiced on several translator forums into figures: It might come handy to assess whether or not to bid for a job offer and how much you earn if you place a bid at certain rate. You can immediately see how much less or how much more you will earn if you lower or raise your bid by 0.01 euro-/dollarcent.

I know that you will refer to Practicount and invoice, but that is a program calculates the value of a translation after it is made, not before and does not take into account the above mentioned variables. Besides Practicount is not linked to the bidding system and prevention is better than cure.

---

Proverbs are the \"crème de la crème\" of a language. Would it be possible to introduce a feature whereby a translator introduces a proverb to be translated in the equivalent of other languages (and if need be award Kudoz-points for the translation).

Two details should be changed, Henry... May 16, 2003

... in the top menu bar, for the sake of increased clarity:

a) \"Directory\" should be renamed to \"Member Directory\" and

b) \"Tools\" should be called, more explicitly, \"CAT Tools\".

(I\'ve already submitted these suggestions to the moderators\' lists).

In addition, I fully support Harry_B\'s proposal to add a tooltip/mouse-over feature to the top menu bar.

MTIA,

Steffen
