Dear ProZ.com,

To address a number of usability and quality issues, the profile updater has been revised. If you are able to take a few moments to visit the profile updater and provide feedback, it will be appreciated.

http://www.proz.com/quick_profile

The display format of the profile itself was not changed as part of this project. The next phase will be to consolidate and transition both fields and settings not found in the current profile updater.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please let me know.

Thank you for supporting the site!

Best regards,
Jon Peck
ProZ.com Developer Coordinator

---

More detailed implementation notes:

The updater now utilizes the layout and data management techniques developed in the company profile updater. While the layout and structure have changed, the individual interfaces should be familiar. Similar profile fields have been logically grouped together. There is an interactive list of required and encouraged profile fields that allows you to jump directly to the field to be updated (entered or opted-out).

Changes to existing profile fields (such as rates) are out of the scope of this project; once the transition is complete, the system will be ready for new features.

A little bug Dec 15, 2008

I'm not sure if this is the place for this, but I found a little quirk. In the 'Financial' section, if one clicks anywhere on the background below the checkbox "I choose not to enter my default rates", said checkbox gets checked and one is greeted with a JavaScript message box with some explanation.
Clearly the checkbox should not be selected by clicking below it.
It seems that the reason for this is an open 'label' tag - the required end tag is missing.
Opera 9.61 on Windows.

In addition, I find the text in that warning message confusing. And the behaviour a little bit too complicated. Why would the already entered rates be deleted? Can't they simply be hidden? And I don't understand why refusing to enter all-encompassing default rates should lead to inability of entering rates for individual languages.

Otherwise, from what I've seen so far, the updater works better than the previous version. But please, do make sure to make clear that there is more than one screen with settings to be changed. Right now it is not quite clear, especially for novice users. It is presumed that everyone will pay attention to the left windows pane with that big arrow, but I'm pretty sure this will not happen.

Keywords for search engines Dec 15, 2008

I could have sworn that it used to say to put a comma, but no space, between keywords. Now it says ONLY put a space. How then can it distinguish between words that are part of a phrase, and words that are not? E.g., current affairs.

Otherwise, looks good.

bsb_2,

Thanks for the bug report and the feedback; I'll get that taken care of.

Susan,

You are correct; I did some SEO research and have come to the same conclusion. It will be updated shortly.

A possible bug Dec 15, 2008

I haven´t been able to access my profile updater today because I keep getting messages to change my password when I try to do it. I changed it once, which should have worked, but it didn´t. Can you help me?

Luiz,

That is very unusual. Thank you for reporting this; due to the nature of the issue, can you please submit a support ticket at http://www.proz.com/support and one of the developers will assist you.

Much better than before Dec 16, 2008

Thanks a lot for the improvements! As others have said, it's much more user friendly now.

I don't really like the word "offerings" in "Services and offerings." I think just "Services" would be fine. That's just a personal opinion though, I don't know how others feel about it

New profile Dec 16, 2008

Looks nice and it seems easy to find all the information. But I wonder where the WWA:s are shown on the new site`?

Under your "Professional history" section Dec 16, 2008

Hi Lilian,

The section to complete or request WWA entries for your profile is now found under the "Professional history" section. Remember you can also request entries by going to the My ProZ.com tab, My WWA. Your WWA entries are still shown as usual, in the upper right corner of your profile.

Best regards,

Jared

Well done and... Dec 16, 2008

Hello Jon,

I just noticed this thread and the changes in the profile updater and I agree with everyone complementing the improvements. It looks so much more "orderly" now, it's great.

On the other hand, I take this opportunity to suggest a couple extra areas/fields for the future, which maybe Proz.com can consider for the next profile updater round of improvements.

How about including:

1) An area for "Proz.com community" activities. That is, an area where we can select if, for example, we have attended powwows or if we have organized them. Or the same for conferences or any Proz.com-related activities online or offline.

2) An area for "continuing education" selection. That is, if, for example, we have attended a translation or any other type of conference, course, etc., online or offline. In this case, it doesn't necessarily have to be a Proz.com-organized one, but it can be any relevant learning course or seminar, etc.

Have a productive week,

Ivette
