(and get access to a full suite of tools and opportunities for the translation professional, too)

Dear ProZians,

The annual year-end membership campaign began today, and will run until December 13th.

If you are already a full paying member of, thank you! Just some of the tools and opportunities your membership investment and participation are making possible: the Blue Board, translation contests, the KudoZ term help network, Term search, translation industry reports for freelancers, the translation center, Translator Group Buying, online invoicing, translation industry news, the Certified PRO Network, in-person and virtual events, in-person and online training. You have helped build a workplace where serious language professionals can expand and improve their businesses, while networking and having fun. This collaborative effort continues to permanently change the translator's profession from a solitary pursuit into something more interactive, more efficient, more rewarding and more profitable. Congratulations!

Not yet a member? Consider using to help differentiate yourself and better market your services.

In this year's State of the industry report for freelance translators, a stronger trend towards language professionals' seeking to better differentiate and market themselves was noted. Increasingly, the right person for the job is just a click away, and standing out is becoming more and more important.

Most professionals who are successfully setting themselves apart and marketing their services agree on a few basics:
  1. Spend time building a strong, professional online presence.

  2. Specialize.

  3. Look for (new) ways to differentiate yourself from the competition.

  4. Network.

  5. Be constant, make it an ongoing activity.

Even if you are fully-booked at the moment, a bit of the right ongoing marketing goes a long way, and can help prevent the need to drop everything and go client hunting if your current demand falls. Your online presence can be a big part of your ongoing marketing, and does not take much time at all.

How can you differentiate yourself?

Make sure you have built a strong, professional-looking profile aimed at showcasing your abilities and services in just one or a few fields of expertise. Use your profile to answer questions like "Why should that client contact me for their next project?" or "Why am I the person to go to for translation in this area of expertise?" Join translator associations, and associations in your fields of expertise. Show examples of the translation quality or quality assurance processes you can provide. Get feedback from clients to show to new potential clients and collaborators. Know your rate and charge accordingly for your work. All of these things, and many more, can be differentiators. membership is another differentiator. It is also the most effective way to make sure that what you have to showcase to new potential clients and collaborators will be seen by them, on an ongoing basis. In addition, it gives you access to a complete suite of tools and opportunities designed with the serious language professional in mind (See the full list of membership benefits here).

During this year-end membership campaign, if you are not already a member you can:
  1. join at a discount over the regular online fee,

  2. get membership until January of 2014 (over a month extra, depending on how soon you join), and

  3. have the chance at some great prizes, including a trip for two to the Bahamas, to be drawn from those who join or renew their membership between now and December 13th.
