\"I\" am the individual, M.A.in Translation fully certified, specialized in subjects x,y,z, with top-Kudoz marks versus \"we\" are \"a translation collective\" consisting of linguists with several mother-tongues, specialists in different subjects, dtp-people and together \"we\" can offer more than the individual professional translator. In which case is \"resistance futile?\"

Which philosophy prevails in today\'s industry? At the supply side it is full of \"I\". What about the demand side?

Feedback from that side (P.M.\'s-clients) would be useful.

Happy New-Year

it's a matter of: who pockets the added value? Jan 1, 2003

Most of the time I hire individuals because my livelihood is in my own added value (i.e. how much I can charge the customer over what I pay the translator).

Teaming up adds value to the translators\' collective - and subtracts it from the agency/outsourcer. It pays for the agency to be the entity around which various individuals work - in fact, it is the life and blood of agency work.

An individual who can only translate will cost less than a team that can do the whole job for you... so the agency makes more money.

What you are saying is that for direct customers one should act as a collective and for agencies as an individual.

Given that sites like Proz et.al. are mediators between mostly agencies and translators, it would be best to opt for selling oneself as the individual linguist, (letting the collective silently adding some value to the service offered)?
