\'Fess up, guys: Is it really worth it to go Platinum?

Hello all of you.

I\'m seriously considering going Platinum, but I must be sure first it will be worth it. I\'ve been a perfectly happy guest member at Proz for almost a year now and I have found really good tips, as well as helpful and supportive colleagues and, I must confess, it\'s been a lot of fun too!

I haven\'t ever gotten a job through Proz, though, and I know this is partially (or supposedly) due to my not being a Platinum member. So, that\'s my real question: does a Platinum membership really (significatively, outstandingly, fantastically, unbelievally) boost up your elegibility?

This is very serious matter to me. Although I admit the membership isn\'t really expensive at all, I am in a difficult economic position right now; to give you a picture, I\'m deciding whether I should buy a fridge or go Platinum and keep the food on the windowsill. I have a regular amount of work right now, but you know how this freelancing thing works: I might have the money today to treat my friends on a luxury dinner, but next month I could just as well find myself scraping crusts of leftover food from my agonizing refrigerator. I\'m exaggerating, I know, but there are plenty of things I need (an improved PC and a new fridge being two of them) and I must prioritize. I just want to know if a Platinum membership should be one of those priorities. If it pays, I will get it; if it doesn\'t, I will wait until later.

So, \'fess up, guys. What do YOU think? Should I do it?

I will appreciate any help on this subject.

Buy the fridge Feb 4, 2003

Actually, I\'m very happy with the Platinum membership. Yes, it has led to direct contacts and ongoing work. It\'s great having access to all the features all the time, apart from feeling that this site is worth supporting so that it can get better and better.

But I\'d still go for the fridge first!! Curdled milk in coffee is not pleasant! And Proz will still be here when you\'re in a better position to afford it!

Don\'t forget that Platinum membership only costs 60 dollars if you have 6000 browniz.

Going Platinum does not automatically brings you jobs Feb 4, 2003

Hello Momichi,

Going Platinum has many obvious advantages but this alone will not guarantee you any jobs. There is much more to it: well written profile, a good market niche, well designed website also your participation in KudoZ. Platinum certainly helps because it really gives you more visibility and also if you don\'t have your own website yet, free hosting available together with Platinum is something I would definitely recommend.

In short, my advice is: buy a fridge first and while enjoying your favorite icecream? champagne? think over your overall marketing strategy of which Platinum membership will be a part.

Go fo it...after you get the fridge :-) Feb 4, 2003

Hola Elis,

Let me quote our colleague:

\"Going Platinum has many obvious advantages but this alone will not guarantee you any jobs.\"

Platinum membership will indeed allow you to access certain features such as Blue Board, Hosting, Team creation and Rate Stats. It will also allow your bid to appear first whenever bidding for a job through ProZ.com or your posting to be visible at once.

It might not bring jobs to you a week after the Platinum icon is next to your name. But... if you are a good translator AND you are Platinum, many outsources will view it as an assurance of quality. I am not saying that a good non-Plat translator/interpreter will not be chosen but ProZ.com has a good name and reputation.

You might want to give ProZ.com a hand and support it with your membership. USD 120/365 days = 0.33 US cents per day will give you:

Networking

Fun

Friends

Glossaries, Tools

Experience

Knowledge, Tips

Last and not least...1. Buy the fridge and hold until you have the money to become a Platinum without stressing the numbers too much. 2. Put some \'chelas\' inside the fridge and make a virtual party.

Cheers,

JL

It's worth it - go for it - promotion is very vital for a freelancer Feb 4, 2003

I\'ve immediately experienced getting job offers after I had signed up for platinum, while I\'d gotten none before. There was no change in profile or anything.

You also get the added feature of the Blue Board, which has made all the diffeence in deceiding in several cases whether I would take on a job or not.

So, it paid off already in the first month.

100% agree Feb 5, 2003

I agree with all the opinions.

I just became a Platinum member one week ago and I think it\'s really valuable, but, Momichi, do not hesitate, buy a new fridge first!!!

please let us know if you have bought the new fridge... Feb 5, 2003

we don\'t want you to get food poisoning! a Platinum membership won\'t help if you are sick...

Anyway, immediately after treat yourself to a Platinum upgrade: it is no guarantee of work but gives you powerful additional tools for getting it. To be in ProZ without being a paying member, is like to visit any club as a guest without having the privileges of regular members.

What would you think of looking also for a secondhand fridge - and maybe going for a Premium membership, to be upgraded later?

I wish you a lot of work - and look forward to welcoming you soon among the \"highest ranks\"...

It's worth it !! Feb 5, 2003

Dear Momichi,

You have almost answered your question yourself:

\"I\'ve been a perfectly happy guest member at Proz for almost a year now and I have found really good tips, as well as helpful and supportive colleagues and, I must confess, it\'s been a lot of fun too!\"

This almost enough reason to pay $ 120 (or 60 + 6000 BrowniZ.

But it\'s also evident that prominent positioning on any website is often the decisive factor for a newcomer or someone who is looking for work.

Platinum = prominence.

Compare what you get at Aquarius and your decision should be easy!

Best regards

Very difficult choice Feb 5, 2003

I would normally like to say you should buy the fridge first. In my flat, my big, new fridge is the best and most useful thing I ever bought.

However, the Blue Board, which you only get with Platinum, is a method I am using at present to find new agencies to work for. You get all the information from the Blue Board: names of lots of agencies in your country, name of a contact person there, and also the information whether they pay their translators or not, how soon, and whether they act professionally towards their translators and also the customers. I don\'t know what I would do without the Blue Board.

With the above information, you can write to say three new agencies a week, offering your services, after you have carefully chosen them from the Blue Board as to their desirability to work for.

Therefore, in this way, Platinum membership could increase your income - as a marketing device.

Nobody, however, will come to you and throw jobs at you just because you go Platinum. You can bid for jobs as usual, and your bid will appear higher up in the list than the bids of non-paying members, that\'s all.

Hope this helps.

Astrid

Definitely worth it Feb 5, 2003

Thanks to becoming a platinum member, I was directly contacted by two agencies that keep me working all year long. I don\'t think that I would have had that luck on my own. I have also had several other BIG jobs come through Proz, but I don\'t know if it was directly related to my Platinum membership. This is my second year as a Platinum member, and I can say that in the past year, all of our appliances wore out and were replaced, thanks to my translations. Fridge, clothes washer, dryer, dishwasher and even my new computer. However, we do not rely on my translations only for the rest of our expenses. My husband works full time elsewhere. So this is really helpful in keeping our large family expenses out of the red (6 children, 4 are still at home).

Of course you have to go Platinum. Feb 5, 2003

Hello Momichi,

Of course you have to go Platinum. Henry is a nice guy and he needs your money.

Having said that I have to admit that it took me a few years before I caughed up the 100 bucks. Part of me detests what the Internet has done to the translation market and the price per word. If I could have it my way I would go back to the pre-Internet, pre-Trados way of doing business and freeze it there...Oh, the good old days...

Needless to say they are gone for ever and we could do much worse than ProZ. This site stands heads and shoulders above the other dozen or so sites that have the same mission and is establishing itself as a clear leader in the industry. Mats mentioned Aquarius; I paid for their golden membership a few years back not because I wanted to, but simply because I did not have another choice. Even that was worth it and I will probably renew it.

For the time being ProZ still offers a choice. You can enjoy its benefits w/o paying a penny or you can say, like I did, \'these guys are actually offering a nice service, they are not greedy...maybe if I help them now they will remember that and continue helping me in the future\'.

Regards,

Dominique

I didn't know you could buy a fridge for 120 bucks... Feb 5, 2003

It must be very small... In fact, ProZ is a bit like a small fridge: tries to do the job, without quite succeeding. I would wait until the fridge gets bigger. This is my opinion... but then I\'m a Platinum member myself...

Fridge for sale Feb 5, 2003

90 Euro, four years old, good condition, was the office fridge but is superfluous now that I am working from home.

Self-employment 101: make hay whilst the sun shines. Work hard when the work is there, and put money aside for a rainy day. When you don\'t have work, you live off your savings and use your time productively - on administration, reading up on your specialist subjects, publicity (have you got a web site?), learning new computer skills. Sorry if this is obvious.

New PC: do you really need one? I have a PII 233 MHz in the office which I use for software testing, but until recently I was translating on it. It is a little slow, but quite fast enough for translation. Value, with four year-old 17\" monitor, maybe Euro 200? Software: Icepack Linux (15 Euro), OpenOffice.org (free) for overwriting MS Word and Excel files, OmegaT translation memory program (free), KMail (free) for e-mail (no viruses - you have to buy Outlook Express for that), Netscape Navigator (free) for web browsing, Acrobat Reader (free) for reading PDF files, Ghostscript (free) for producing them, etc. etc.

By the way, you\'ll have to collect the fridge (from Bergisch Gladbach, nr. Cologne, Germany) if you want it.

Marc
