Dear all,

Due to the air traffic shutdown over Europe after the volcanic eruption in Iceland, the conference has been postponed. The event will not be taking place this weekend. Further details and information will be published as they become available.

We have been calling all of you today to explain the situation but we could not reach some of you. If you did not speak to Hacene or me on the phone today, please check your voicemails/SMS/e-mails.

Thank you for your patience. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Please do not hesitate if there's anything we can do.

Kind regards,
Anne

Sorry to hear the news! Apr 16, 2010

I am sorry to hear the news, guys.

So... slow payments, technical issues with CAT tools, low rates, urgent work, and now Icelandic volcanoes?icon_wink.gif

Perhaps a big banner on the homepage? Apr 16, 2010

Anne,
Wouldn't it be helpful to put a big sign up on the homepage about it? (The logged-in homepage.)

Cannot return to England ... :( Apr 17, 2010

Hi, there,

You have no idea how disappointed I am! (trust me, I'm not complaining about Proz, I was just really looking fwd to this).

I left Cairo on the 14th at night and arrived on Thursday morning in London. I gave myself one day cushion after and before the conference to make sure I arrived at the conference in time without rushing.

That was when the conference was supposed to start on Friday, but then Proz cancelled the Friday sessions. Fine, I took the chance to walk around London and sleep. But I hadn't seen any messages re: the conference being postponed.

I just spent over $700 alone on the ticket to London, and I cannot afford to do another trip here to wait for the next conference.

I'm in Bham, what can be done?????

Best to you,
Dahlia Ferrer

A dinner is organized tonight in Birmingham Apr 17, 2010

Dear Dahlia, dear all,

A small number of you did not get our messages in time despite our efforts and made it to Birmingham.

We will be organizing an informal dinner tonight in the Birmingham city center, you are very welcome to attend (locals too of course, even if you were not registered for the conference, you are welcome to join).

Hacene will meet you all between 20:00 and 20:30 tonight at Wagamama (noodle bar), 50 Bullring Shopping Centre, Digbeth Birmingham B54QL.
(see map and contact data here).

If you need to call Hacene on his cellphone and do not have his number, please send me an email at anne@proz.com and I will give it to you.

Warm regards to all and have a great evening!

Anne

Icelandic revenge Apr 18, 2010

I am surprised not to have seen this thought expressed on the net yet, but I am sure that it will come up sooner or later:

Iceland, after having seen its banking system ruined by greedy Europeans, has conspired with higher powers to unleash an inferno of smoke and ashes over our continent with no end in sight - ruining the EU's economy in the process.
Quite a successful (and non-violent) revenge, isn't it ?

Good luck to all the people stranded in airports, and for those who are 'only' stuck in a foreign city: enjoy the forced holiday..

Sorry to hear that the event has been postponed Apr 19, 2010

We, as sponsors, are sorry to hear that this event has been postponed and hope that a new date will be fixed in the near future.

As consolation to those of you who should have attended, but couldn't, here is short listing of multilingual glossaries relating to volcano terminology:

when will it be rescheduled? Apr 20, 2010

Hi, I am still looking forward to having the conference rescheduled in Birmingham (or maybe it will be transferred to another place and another country?). Hopefully my UK visa is still valid, thoughicon_smile.gif.

A new date for 2010 cannot be set at the moment Apr 21, 2010

Dear all,

After the volcanic eruption that caused the air traffic shutdown over Europe, all options regarding the Birmimgham conference were carefully reviewed, and unfortunately a new date for 2010 cannot be set for this event at the moment.

I will be contacting all who registered for this event personally to make the necessary arrangements. In addition, plans are being made to make sure the planned material reaches registrants, by providing them with online sessions which they will be able to view and participate in.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind regards,
Anne
