I still need a few more European language dictionaries, including Romanian, in electronic format, but not the online or mobile-phone versions, but instead on DVD/CD or downloadable. I recently purchased Romen, which seems too small and a bit crude, so I don't find much for Romanian out there, and there is increasing clutter, now that google isn't so "clean" anymore. I've been searching on Romanian electronic dictionary -handheld -online -portable -talking -ectaco -mobile.

Does anyone have a recommendation. Preferably in the 50-150K entries range.

Thanks!

Not Ectaco again! Mar 23, 2008

Thanks Irina, but I specifically excluded Ectaco from my search. That of course also applies to similar "stand-alone" devices. I need everything in one place - that would be my miniature laptop.

Is the Romen really the only viable option out there, do you think?

I did browse previous threads of a similar nature, but they were quite old and many links were dead, or in one case carried a warning of malware.

Babylon? Mar 23, 2008

Thanks for the above links.

I did subscribe to Babylon for about a year. I thought they were exclusively online. I really need something that is installable on a laptop for cases where Internet access is not an option, and when I need to give clients a rough idea of what's in a foreign language document such as Romanian.

I will now proceed to try out these various links.

Ta,
YR

a pretty good dictionary, but not free Apr 1, 2008

Hi Yngve,

I am using a quite good En-Ro/Ro-En dictionary, available in a USB-Stick version.
It's not free, but also not too expensive (approx. 100 USD) given that it includes some over 400K terms.
The only issue is that their website is only written in Romanian... and it's overseas...

I hope this helps:

For U3 memory sticks and at a surprinsingly low price. http://software.u3.com/Product_Details.aspx?ProductId=305&Selection=3&Lang=en-US
See the Oxford University Press website for the rest of Oxford English Dictionaries (on CD-ROM).
Unfortunately, they don't have an English-Romanian-English dictionary ;-(

What's a u3 memory stick, I mean how is it different from the various flash memory plug-ins I already have? Does it need to be purchased somewhere, somehow?

Babylon Apr 2, 2008

Hi again,

I bought Babylon for about 4 years and I can use it off-line without problems. It has also some free dictionaries EN-RO-EN, you only have to download them and install and it´s really easy: Ctrl+right taste mouse and you have the translation on your desktop. Off line. I mean, I´m really satify with.

Babylon again! Apr 2, 2008

Alright cameliaim, I'll check with Babylon again, if what you say is true, i.e., it can be downloaded and made resident on your hard drive, at least selections thereof. They must have expanded since I used them last year, or rather two years ago. There was not much there outside the major language combinations, i.e., only fragmentary stuff, as I recall.

Thanks,
YR

Example Apr 2, 2008

"When you are offline (not connected to the Internet):
To get results when you are offline you must have dictionaries or encyclopedias installed locally on your computer.
In this example, Babylon has English-English, English-French, and Spanish-English dictionaries as installed dictionaries, and the Babylon Arabic-English as an online dictionary.
The Target Languages (the languages Babylon will search for more results in) are Hebrew, English, Arabic, French, Greek, Swedish, and German.

but, as said, you have to download the RO dictionaries.

Reagards,
Camelia

See this link Yngve: http://www.u3.com/default.aspx
I guess almost any memory stick would do. The important thing is the U3 software. The site eplains everything better than I can.

Ok, Lucian:
From looking at the image there at that link, I recognized it as a flash disk I had in my car.
So, it worked out fine apparently,
