Apr 5, 2008

Forgive me for writing in English, but I just wondered how the number in Agatha Christie's title came to be reduced from ten to nine in Russian. It was originally "Ten Little негритят" (I'd better not write that word in English, it's too politically incorrect even for me), then "Ten Little Indians", and now, presumably to avoid offending native Americans, it is sold in the USA under the title "And Then There Were None". But in the first two of these titles, and in the nursery rhyme from which they and also the third one were taken, the number was always ten, not nine.

It's not 9 Apr 5, 2008

Dear Jack, whatever made you assume it was reduced to nine?

Геннадий не единственный Apr 5, 2008

After reading Gennady's post, I entered "Девять негритят" in Google and got 6,920 hits for it. However, I have now tried again with "Десять негритят", and that produces 72,000 hits. So about ten per cent of all references to it say nine instead of ten.

A different title Apr 5, 2008

That appears to be a different title from a Russian author:

Not always Apr 5, 2008

On the first page of my first attempt on Google, there was one reference to Andrey Ilyin, but all the others were to Agatha Christie's book.

RESPONSE Apr 5, 2008

THE TRANSLATION OF ANY TITLE IS A VERY DIFFICULT TASK:
'FUNNY GAMES' CAN IN NO WAY BE TRANSLATED AS 'SMESHNYYE IGRY' ILI 'SMYEKHOTVORNYYE IGRY'; BUT YOU MAY TRANSTATE IT AS 'ZABAVNYYE IGRY';
PLEASE, MIND THE CONNOTATION OF 'FUNNY' IN AMERICAN ENGLISH IS BEYOND THE SENSE OF 'SMYESHNOY'- PLEASE, RECOLLECT THAT ' HAVING FUN' IS AN ADVANTEROUS ACTION, PROVOCATIVE AND VERY OFTEN CHALLENGING;
YOU MAY TRANSLATE IT ALSO 'ISPYTANIYE IGROY', - MANY VARIANTS ARE POSSIBLE.
THE GAMES UNDER THE CONSIDERATION ARE THE GAMES OF VALOR-
THUS, 'SMYELYYE IGRY' / 'IGRA V SMYELOST'' ARE ALSO POSSIBLE- THE LEXICOLOGY AND THE STYLISTICS ARE GOOD SUPPORTERS OF THE VARIANTS.

Quite so Apr 5, 2008

You're right, Ivan, as is Gennady.

The point I was trying to make was that movie titles are typically "localized" or "adapted" - not translated. And box office considerations appear to dominate all other factors...

By the way, please refrain from using all caps per the forum rules. Thanks!
