Dear all,
I run a translation agency and am desperate because I've got a) an angry client who tells me my translator did a poor job and b) an angry translator (whom I really like and always found very competent) who says the client is simply not right. Could you help and tell me whether the following translations are grammatically correct:
English original:

Which are the favourite tastes of your child/ children in …?

Beverages
Yoghurt
Dessert
Candies
Chewing Gum
Cereals
Biscuits

Russion translation:

Любимый вкус Вашего ребенка/детей (из следующих продуктов)…?
Напитки
Йогурт
Десерты
Конфеты
Жевательная резинка
Хлеб
Печенье

Which tastes do you associate with…?
Masculinity
Femininity
Love & Passion
Fashion
Fun

Russion translation:

Какие вкусы у Вас ассоциируются с…?
Мужественность
Женственность
Любовь & Страсть
Мода
Веселье

My question is:

When you put in the different answering options into the question - is the grammar always correct, do the answering options fit with the context of the question, are the endings correct? Which grammatical case does the way the question is asked require?

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Nathalie

Hi Nathalie Feb 6, 2009

I am afraid, your client is right...

First of all, the question "Любимый вкус Вашего ребенка/детей (из следующих продуктов)" does not sound like a native Russian.

Second, the question "Какие вкусы у Вас ассоциируются с…?" has wrong punctuation, while the answers should be in instrumental case, not in nominative.

Moreover, the syntax is also wrong in "Любовь & Страсть", while "cereals" is not quite "хлеб"...

Criticism Feb 6, 2009

Natalie raises some valid points.

1) Хлеб is bread, not cereals. A severe mistranslation.
2) The first question is worded wrong. It's a style/accuracy issue - the meaning might be understood, but it's worded in a really bad way so as to hinder understanding.
3) In the second question, the endings are not correct (the answers do not agree grammatically with the question).
4) The ampersand should not be used in Russian, ever. Capitalization is also wrong in the second question.

Overall, the translation looks very sloppy.

Hope this helps.

Yes, Feb 6, 2009

cereals rather means porridge or muesli. And "Какие вкусы у Вас ассоциируются с…?" is definitely bad translation.

Oleg, please don't introduce any more confusion. Candies is correctly translated as конфеты already, and dessert is десерты, so there's no mistake there.

Еще что-то мне не нравится здесь множественное число у слова "вкус".. Это у человека могут быть вкусы, у пищи - вкус. Я не прав?

Well, I am not Russian Feb 7, 2009

English original:

Which are the favourite tastes of your child/ children in …?

Russion translation:

Любимый вкус Вашего ребенка/детей (из следующих продуктов)…?

If I had to translate this question to Russian, it would be like this:

Какой из данных продуктов Ваш ребенок любит больше всего?
или
Какой из данных продуктов Ваш ребенок предпочитает?

Your client is right, your translator is wrong. And this is not the case "the client is always right"
Besides, from this translation it does not seem that the translator is very competent.

The question is not about the product prefered by the child, but on the prefered taste of each product

More questions Feb 7, 2009

I agree that Russian translation is not good but the grammar and the endings are correct.
My version of first question translation is
Which are the favourite tastes of your child/ children in …?
Что по вкусу больше всего нравится вашему ребенку / детям в ...?
But this question (in English or in Russian) looks very strange for me, I don't know how to answer it - and it's a problem. Maybe we should improve the original?
Or maybe my translation is wrong?

The endings of the words in question may be considered correct only if these words are taken out of context.

But this question (in English or in Russian) looks very strange for me, I don't know how to answer it - and it's a problem.

Quite simple, for example:
Beverages: sweet apple [juice]
Yoghurt: strawberry [yoghurt],
Chewing Gum: mint,
etc.

Maybe we should improve the original?

We should not for sure. We haven't been asked to do this (we haven't been even asked to propose our own versions, just to present our opinion about the translation). Moreover, translator's task is translating, and not improving the source text. Translator may only suggest to the outsourcer to correct any mistakes/inconsistencies or other problems noticed while translating. Otherwise the translator must simply do his/her best to render the original text in the target language.
