I am sorry for not writing in Russian in this forum. Even though I speak the language to some extent, I cannot produce cyrillic font.
I am doing a research on medieval toponyms (for my own pleasure), especially on the term "Red Russia". I found one Hungarian source, but I would like to confirm this.

This source claims that a colour-symbolism originated in China that attached the main geographical directions with certain colours, and this symbolism made its way through various Turkic peoples into the Kievan Rus.
North is supposed to be associated with black, East with blue, West with white and South with red.
Various parts of the Eastern Slavic homeland were then called White Russia, Red Russia and Black Russia, according to their geographic position viewed from Kiev.
This would also explain the name "Byelorussia" or "White Russia".
Can you confirm this theory?
My other question is: what exactly used to be called "Red Russia"? Some Hungarian sources say it was exactly the same as the principality of Halich, others say it was only a part of this principality, along the Dnyester river.
Any sources on this one?

Возможно, воспроизводимые «цветные» названия орд, взятые из арабских источников, соответствуют реальным наименованиям субъектов ВКЛ: Белая Русь (Полоцк, Витебск, Смоленск, Могилёв), Чёрная Русь (Гродно, Волковыск, Слоним), Красная Русь (Волынь, Галиция).

See more Почему-то я всегда, скорее всего ошибочно, считала, что 'красная' употреблялсь в значении 'красивая', как "красна девица" или "не красна изба углами, а красна пирогами". Даже в голову не приходило, что это обозначение определенной территории.
