Dissociative identity disorder? Oct 24, 2010

George became Andy after a few lines?

Boy, those scammers really should take better care of their email templates. Bummer!

Could not be more transparent Oct 24, 2010

In addition to the name change mentioned by Nicole, there are the following issues:

1.)
Why the individual would specifically need a written translation prior to his visit to Germany. (simply sloppy thinking on his part; such scams usually involve a supposed "interpretation assignment" for an upcoming visit)

2.)
Why he would mention being physically disabled and using a wheelchair. (to gain sympathy and disarm suspicions, I would guess)

Definitely a scam. If this was posted on proz.com, I would hope that the staff immediately remove the post and ban this user from the site in the future. One wonders why this post wasn't vetted properly to begin with....

And of course, your clients typically pay you in advance and not 60 days following the end of the next ice age, don't they...?

What happened to the good old telephone? Oct 24, 2010

Have you called the number to see if George/Andy is home? He could give you his credit card number over the phone and you could charge his card right away, as desired.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

Because of course a traveller's cheque is a normal way to pay for translations (or indeed anything), right?

N.B. I wouldn't generally recommend that people get at all involved in e-mails that look like scams. Although in this case it looks like a fairly low-level scammer who couldn't even be bothered to hide their IP address, it's probably best not to underestimate what a cleverer scammer could start finding out about *you* if you start engaging with them and give them enough motivation. It's best just to stay well away.

"I understand because we all need to be carefull as there is fraud everywhere but you can trust me sir, am a God fearing man"

If you have ANY fear in God - you should prepare for his judgement the day you face Him.

commandments you broke in these mails:

#3 "Do not take the name of the Lord in vain"
#9 "You shall not steal"
#10 "You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor"

Hope you'll regret some day, i doubt you'll be going anywhere but down when judgement day arrives

GEORGE MILL or DAVID Oct 26, 2010

I also received emails from George Mills, then became David, requiring a certain a translation project to be paid with eurochecks. he even said he is coming to Barcelona in two weeks! I just asked him to send me down payment via paypal or wire transfer, let's see what happens! Of course I have not even seen the sample text yet. Thanks to your comments and warning I could confirm it was a scam.

If you want to read something interesting, read scambusters Oct 26, 2010

There are many sites out there listing these scams, but this one is particularly interesting as it has real stories of how these scammers were taken for a ride:

I have just got the same email Oct 26, 2010

I was wondering if it could be a scam, that's why I have googled the phone number and ended reading this thread.

Thank you so much for your help.

He told me he was coming to SPAIN in a couple of weeks... this sounded very strange.

The truth is that I haven't given him any details about me, but now I am a bit scared... Should I be scared??? Is this a real threat???

He has asked many questions about me and I told him to look in my web page, which redirects people to my Proz profile.

THANKS!!!

I think life's too short to pore over the details of these scams and discuss them on ProZ. (Mind you, I'm doing it now, so I'm a fine one to talk.)
