Virus? Jan 22, 2011

Isn't downloading this zip file and opening it a pretty common way of catching a virus or the like?

I did in fact download and open the file last night. Doesn't seem to be a problem/virus so far - but you got me a little spooked!

Please report these scams to site staff Jan 23, 2011

If they came through Proz.com, all you have to do is scroll down to the bottom of the mail, and you will find a link to click on to report the mail as spam.

It's as simple as that!

I got the same mail Jan 23, 2011

I got the same mail from this person but the links in the body of the email will not work. The link to their ftp just does not show any page. I don't know if we can accept an offer from this agency. They have a website and seem genuine. Have someone taken a look at the Blueboard to check their records? Or has anybody work for this agency before?

How do we protect ourselves ?? Jan 23, 2011

Has anyone done a full translation work, sent it in and never being paid ?? How can we trust
a job found on a webpage, no guarantees, no one to turn to in case of a misfortune ? So we should ask for some payment in advance or what ??

The job you are commenting on, how can anybody translate 82.000 words, hand it in and wait for a whole month to be paid, it's 82000 words!, not a piece of cake, so how we should go about it

Thanks
Sanda

Hi,

I was looking for info on another type of scam but came across this. The name sounded familiar. This the email I got from "Zak Orel":

Kind Regards,
Zack

I sent my resume along with this reply:

Hello Zack,

Thank you for contacting me. Please tell me the nature of the project, word count, and deadline so I can quote a price and inform of my availability.

Please also provide contact details of your agency.

Thank you,

Qudsia

Never heard back from the person!

Also, the name in the email showed as "Zak" and the signed name was 'Zack'.

also received this email Jan 24, 2011

Hi,
I just got the exact same email from this person, just the language pair is EN-Chinese Simplified.

I wonder what to do... the document is about 80K words and the price is OK, but I really cannot trust this guy even he provided his address/phone in Egypt. What am I supposed to do if he's not paying me after 30 days? Fly to this place in Egypt and look for him?

Can anyone confirm that this IS a scam or anybody has worked for him without being paid?

Thanks!

Please see Jan 24, 2011

http://www.proz.com/forum.php/scams/188200-possible_scam.html (but I'm not sure if this is connected with the received emails)

1. Check with ATC if they are indeed a member.
2. Ask if they have a Bleuboard on Proz and see what other say about them
3. Look at the received documents and try to figure out who the client is. You could contact the client direcly if you don't get paid for the job.
4. If they are really serious about this assignment, they should be able to understand your concerns and offer a small downpayment or after you have done an x amount of words.
Getting someone's contact details doesn't guarantee payments.
