Just delete it and walk on.

Check payments Jul 17, 2012

should be flashing giant red lights. Classic scam using overpayment with a fraudulent check, then demanding the difference back before the check clears. You lose time and the money that may have been refunded. Don't touch it with a 10-foot pole.

I also received a message... Jul 18, 2012

The man that sent me the message is Rocco Buttiglione (like the Italian politician lol).
Also with a gmail account, payment by check, a private IP number,...

He posted a job here on ProZ on July 5.
But the funny thing is that he had a profile on ProZ, with a comment of one translator who gave him a good quote! When the job was closed, I couldn't find his profile anymore...
He has only given me an address.

Here is what he wrote (he answered me July 9)

This is a criterion. I do not share it. A corporate client should use corporate email addresses but a freelancer can contact you with a Yahoo or Gmail address. Then you need to do your homework to validate this person's identity.

I tend to agree with Jeff Jul 20, 2012

I NEVER accept work from private individuals with free e-mail addresses. There is simply no way to verify the identity of someone thousands of miles away.
I can't possibly imagine a scenario where a legitimate individual client would use free e-mail. Well, I could imagine people with free e-mail wanting birth certificates etc. translated, but there is so little profit in such works that I simply don't bother.

They should at least have (paid) accounts with their internet provider for me to consider them as clients. After all, who are the likely individuals that could offer you profitable work = willing to pay your fees for bigger projects? Professors, lawyers, businesspeople, etc. = none of these would use free e-mail.
