Hello!
I have to translate an excel document with Tag Editor (Trados 7).
The client sent me the document, the TM and she sends me information about the matches (wich I paste in yhis message)
We accorded 0,65 euros per word but how many words do I have to charge with this fee?
It is the first time I translate with Tag Editor/Trados, and I am a bit confused. How many words are there in total? How can I check if the information of the client is right?
I am communicated with the client right now, so I still can fix the conditions.
Can somebody help me?

This is the info of the matches:

What have you agreed upon? Apr 15, 2008

Look if you have promised some scheme in your communications.
If there is no prior agreement, you must work one out.
Either the customer pays the same amount for every word (60778) or you apply a weighing according to the degree of similiarity.
The result should be a sum that reflects the amount of work you have put into this job.

Was the work easier thanks to the tm and Trados or did you need more time than normally? That's the main question here.

Regards
Heinrich

How should I charge the translation according with the matches? Apr 15, 2008

Thank you for your answer.
The thing is I don´t know if the TM is going to help me or not before I begin with the translation...?
How do you see the number of words in the matches info?
She told me it was a 20, 016 words document when I accepted the job.

Thank you

This is what the breakdowns the client proposes me:

100% matches and repetitions: 20% of rate
95% - 99% matches: 30% of rate
85% - 94% matches: 60% of rate

Rates according TM matches Apr 15, 2008

Hi Marion,

as Heinrich pointed out it depends on the schemes you've agreed upon.

The agencies I work for usually have this kind of scheme:

- 100% matches nothing or 1/4 of the rate for new words
- 85-99% matchses 1/3 of the rate for new words
- 75-84% mathces 2/3 of the rate for new words
- 0-74% "matches" full new word rate

I hope this helps a little.

Best regards,
Nickiy

20 % is low Apr 15, 2008

For 100% matches you should charge the same you would charge for editing work, if you have to check each match and correct if necessary.
The breakdown is not so important if you set your word-rate to a reaonable level so you do not lose out.
After a while you will notice if the scheme is appropriate to you or not.
Most of the time the less than 100% matches are only a small part of the whole text and it does not matter much how they are taken into account.

P.S. word count Apr 15, 2008

Hi Marion,

the the analysis you gave are of three files separately and a total analysis all together.
First file: Newsp asfromspaID3053.11.04.2008.xls.ttx
Match Types Segments Words Percent Placeables
Context TM 0 0 0 0
Repetitions 68 95 0 66

95% - 99% 14 99 0 11
85% - 94% 11 35 0 10

No Match 1,109 20,252 99 418
Total 1,327 20,836 100 564

The word count for the first file is 20,836 (it is the second number/column in the analysis).

of al three:

Analyse Total (3 files):

reading the match types Apr 15, 2008

thank you it helps!

But if I understand well according to this

Match Types Segments Words Percent Placeables
Context TM 0 0 0 0
Repetitions 162 397 1 112
100% 335 827 1 102
95% - 99% 18 154 0 13
85% - 94% 55 313 1 43
75% - 84% 91 639 1 57
50% - 74% 57 451 1 44
No Match 3,284 57,997 95 1,195
Total 4,002 60,778 100 1,566

Chars/Word 5.30
Chars Total 322,511

397 repetition words
827 words which are 100% matches
154 words which are 95%-99% matches
313 words which are 85% - 94%matches
639 words which are 75%-84% matches
451 words which are 50% - 74% matches

and 57 997 words which are no match

And to find out the amount of money I have to receive I have to calculate for example:

827 words at 20% of my rate (0,065 euro per word)
which would be 0,052 (0,065 x 20% = 0,013 and 0,065-0,013 = 0,052)
827x0,052

+

154 words at 30% of my rate

and so on...

Is that right?

Thank you

"Help, I have to charge for my work" Apr 15, 2008

My prosaic suggestion:

take the money offered. Either you are paid a handsome rate. Or you are paying for your education. Or maybe even both. But this is all immaterial:

Make sure you do a good job.

Hi Marion

Just a correction (may be easier to work with the fractions). Two veeeery different things:

-I give a reduction of 20% on my base rate:
where 0.065 is the base rate
0.065 - (0.065x20%) = base rate taking 20% off [you are charging 80% of base rate]

-I charge at 20% of my base rate:
where 0.065 is the base rate
0.065x20%= base rate taking 80% off [you are charging only 20% of base rate]

I think the agency means the second case scenario, far less than you might have thought!

I hope it helps

Kind regards,

Marta

Thank you for your answer Marta!
It makes sense, yes... you are right.
I made a mistake.

In this same example, I would have to charge 827 words at 0,013 euros, and so on...

Thank you
