TagEditor stumbels over apostrophe Thread poster: Ingeborg Aalders
|
Good morning, I am translating from French to Dutch. Everytime I run into an apostrophe in my target segment (I always copy and overwrite the source text into the target segment), TagEditor refuses to overwrite and continues to insert the text I am typing. Even deleting the apostrophe doesn't help. It is not a big problem, but quite annoying. Has anyone seen this before and do you maybe happen to know how to solve this? Thanks a lot! inbgeborg

It could have something to do with Unicode vs latin-1 etc character set. If the source is editable (like RTF or similar) I would just transliterate the apostrophe to something less "offensive", like a paragraph or a dollar sign. regards Vito

Thank you Vito for your help. The source text is just a Word doc. Is there, as far as you know, no possibility to change something in the settings of Tag Editor? Because if I change all the apostrophes to something else, my french source gets quite illegible..

Recently, I had a French doc file with some Far East (?) char instead of apostrophe. I.e. a Chinese font (SimSun?) was reported in Word. Try to find and replace these signs by true apostrophes. It may help. Cheers GG

In the grey font ligns in TagEditor, it just says So as far as I can see, there are no funny Chines characters being used. Or should I look elsewhere? It's not just this particular text which has this problem, I have it in all my French translations. As soon as an apostrophe appears, my writing mode changes from 'overwrite' to 'insert' (however, this is not displayed in my windows screen, which keeps saying OVR).

I may be just another char looking as apostrophe. In some cases, you have no font change. E.g. some Frenchies use left/right single quotation mark or similar. It seems incredible but it's true... For an unknown reason TE may treat this sign as a tag. Maybe this will help BR Jerzy

Thank you Jerzy, I followed your instructions, but unfortunately it doesn't help. I decided to turn off the "Copy source on no match" option. Also annoying, because you need to put in all the tags separately, but less annoying than having to delete a french sentence after every translated segment.
