Trados keeps telling me the word document is not a word document!

I'm sure there's a perfectly good explanation, but Trados won't clean up or analyse a file because it's not Word document (when it is!). I've tried re-saving it as a 1997-2003 version, and changing it's name: .doc, .docx etc. But it still doesn't want to do it (very frustratingly!!). Never had this problem before.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Have you tried changing it to a .rtf file?
Is there anything special in the file, such as html codes etc?
