Formatting corrupted when saving segments

When I save segments in Trados, they keep turning into upper case, bold and italics, without any prompting, and the "font" settings in Word switch automatically to "all upper case" (or whatever it is in English - mine's in Portuguese). The problem first started when I fiddled about in the "upper and lower case" settings, trying to get a text which was in upper case into lower case. I then put the option back onto "First letter of the sentence in Upper case" but it keeps switching back to upper case by itself. I don't know whether the problem is with Word, or Trados, but it only seems to happen when I am saving segments in Trados - and it seems to be mostly in segments which are next to headings (in bold or capitalized).

Has anybody else experienced this problem?

Fiona

Some styles (such as the in-built List Bullet) are set to by default to update automatically. Trados usually either reapplies the default style or inserts the format that was used in the TM when retrieving similar text.

Using styles to format your document (other than Normal, which you should modify very carefully, since may screw up your document royally) may solve your problem.

Thanks for your input. But I'm not sure what I should do, exactly. How do I implement your suggestion?

Working with Styles Oct 11, 2008

This is relevant for Word 2003.
The following applies for a document style other than Normal.

1. Save your file. Once you save a style, it's impossible to undo the change.

2. Select the problem section. Press Format/ Styles and Formatting. The style in which the cursor is placed will be indicated in a light-blue frame in the side pane that opens. If you press the little down arrow next to style name, you can open the Modify screen. Uncheck the Automatically Update box if it is checked.
Exit the Modify window.
3. Format the style as you want it.
4. Press again the little down arrow at the respective style in the side bar and select Update to Match Selection. This updates the style as you wish it to be formatted.
This is it.

If the style is Normal, you can apply a style you normally use (such as the inbuilt style Body Text) by typing the style name in the style box on the toolbar, and proceed with formatting as above.

After formatting the style, try this with Trados, see what happens.
Working with styles is a good idea anyway.
HTH,
Sandra

I can see that your solution would fix a file which has already been corrupted, but what about new texts - Trados is putting in bold where the text isn't in bold, and sometimes capitals too. Its not just odd segments here and there, but practically the entire text that's affected, so it would be time-consuming to fix each portion individually.
When I looked in "show formatting" in Word it seems to show Arabic as one of the languages. I guess that's not normal is it? (unless you happen to be an Arabic translator).

the doc file to TagEditor. In most cases this will ensure that styles, etc. are not affected.

Thanks spiros

That could be one short-term solution, if it ever happens again.
The problem seems to be fixed now though. I think it was because the the normal/default style in Word had been altered - I have fiddled about and all seems to be working normally. I downloaded a little program called ccleaner, which I think may have helped (just putting it on the record, incase somebody gets the same problem in the future and ends up in this forum).

Thanks all, for your help.

Fiona

Trying to contain a tsunami with a plank Oct 17, 2008

We have had that for many years and Trados keeps having this problem.

Honestly, instead of all the lengthy steps suggested... use TagEditor for your Word documents! It does not damage any styles or formats and lets you work with a clean environment, without all the little boxes, headers, footers, etc. etc. etc. Just the text for you to translate.

If you are OK with working around with tags, TagEditor is the way to go for Word documents. You can always run your Word spellchecker after saving the target document back to Word.
