I have just tried using TRADOS on a text with italics, bold, and many different applied styles, and the SW could not cope with it and refused to run.
Is this normal?
I've had to turn the document into a .txt in order to use TRADOS, and I will be changing it back once the translation is done.
This can't be the RIGHT way to use TRADOS, surely!

Did you work on a standard Word file (.doc)?
Usually Trados respects colors, fonts, font size, italics, bold, though occassionaly it messes up stuff. But in most cases it's fine.

???
You work in Word?
Sometimes it's far from being perfect but usually it works...

Your language pair is simple to handle in Word (no usual font corruption typical to CE or Cyrillic languages) unless the file comes from China (or from other Far East Asia countries) and contains Chinese (or similar) fonts/styles.

Indeed.
Try to use Tag Editor.

I agree, Lieta, Oct 19, 2008

using Tag Editor for a document with many different styles solves the problem.
