Please please use the search function Jan 21, 2009

just recently there is a parallel topic called "PDF editor".
The PDF question is one of the most asked here.
So please forgive if I do not rewritte all what was already said about this.
But the general answer is a clear "NO" without any preparation. When you extract the text from PDF with any means, then you can process it. Otherwise no - and this is good so. PDF is designed to be protected format.

Good morning, Maria,
Short answer: no (at least not directly).

Please use the forum search - this is one of the most frequently discussed issues in this forum.

Best regards,
Ralf

No, we can't translate the document in PDF format Jan 21, 2009

Hello!

We can't translate the document in PDF format. First of all you have to convert the document in Powerpoint, Excel or Word format to translate the document. After doing the translation, you can change the format of the document, i.e. PDF, there are many tools available to change the format from Powerpoint, Excel or Word format to PDF.

Regards.

You Can Use pdf Converters Jan 21, 2009

Hi,
You can use freely available pdf converters to convert it to doc/rtf format. Some of such converters can retain the formatting of the doc same as pdf. Then you can translate it easily.

After completing your process, you can convert the translated file back to pdf.

Thanks,
Meenakshi

sure? Jan 21, 2009

Are you sure you need to deliver in PDF format? That would be very unusual, as it would make it difficult for your client to change anything/edit your work.

Quite easily actually. There is a copy function as well as other options. Word has a marvelous table function if you need it.

do you realise what you are getting into? Jan 21, 2009

If your client wants to have the document returned in PDF with all the drawings, tables, etc. from the source document, and presumably with the same layout as the source document, the client is effectively asking you to do not only translation but also document layout and formatting (what is commonly called desktop publishing functions). This can be quite time consuming, and even more so if the figures contain text that requires translation (which in the worst case means generating them anew from scratch).

You can copy figures from a PDF document to a Word document as images, and they will be transferred in this form to a PDF document generated from the Word document, but in this form they are only editable as bitmap images and you cannot edit any text they contain.

Another consideration is that in many cases the formatting performed by PDF to Word conversion programs looks good on the screen or on paper but is inconvenient for translation or (especially with inexpensive conversion programs) makes translation practically impossible if the PDF document is highly formatted (e.g. with tables and multiple columns, insets, etc.).

In summary, my advice would be to tell your (potential) client that this job will involve considerably more work than just translation and that you will charge extra (e.g. by the hour) for the additional work. Sometimes this is enough to cause clients to discover that they actually have the source material in a more convenient form.

Graphics copied from a PDF Jan 21, 2009

Where there is translatable text involved, one can usually do text box overlays on the bitmap with or without erasing the text from the bitmap (depending on its complexity). This often involves little more time than alternatives like key tables and gives a graphic than can be used and understood more easily. For high-quality print applications this is, of course, nonsense except as a guide to recreating the graphic.

Sometimes I'll also edit the graphic directly in the PDF document (using Acrobat or other tools) before copying it to Word as a bitmap.
