Hello everybody,
I am currently in great need of the program of SDL TRADOS for free. This sounds a stupid message but I hope that someone could give me some advice regarding the source where I can find a free version for this great translation tool.
Please help me if you know any information about this.
Kindly give me your advice through my nick at: thanhlongdtfv@yahoo.com.au
Hope that this message will not disturb you.

There is NO legal free version, but a legal trial Mar 17, 2009

hello "Long Tran",

you can try the software for free for 30 days (please check SDL Trados website), but there is no legal free version of this CAT.

Demo mode: 100 translation units Mar 17, 2009

You can dounload it at: http://downloadcentre.sdl.com/T2007/SP2/SDLTrados2007_FL_SP2_835.exe

But take into account that it only allows you to translate 100 translation units (or 30 days). I strongly recommend you to invest in this CAT tool, that you consider "great". Any "free" version you might get it will be illegal.

Kind regards

Clarisa Moraña

Just invest in Trados from Proz.com Mar 17, 2009

Hi Long,

There's no free software in this world. You just have to buy it as it is a means of assisting the people who developed it. They put in long hours to produce it.
It is best to collaborate with Proz.com to join others in group buys which sell Trados every month at a discount.
It is absolutely satisfactory once you've bought it as the real version is still far better than the demo one.

Hope this helps you.

If money is the problem, I would recommend you to look for more cost-efective alternatives Mar 18, 2009

There are several other alternatives in the market able to emulate and even surpass the TRADOS functions and to handle TRADOS files, without the price tag and the recurrent actualizations.

Please take a look to:

http://www.omegat.org (free)
www.across.net (free for freelancers)
www.wordfast.com
www.wordfast.org, from where you can download an outdated free version, with no limitations

Saludos

I wonder what has made you think of Trados as a "high ranking" tool Apr 4, 2016

You can use the trial version of CafeTran: www.cafetran.com

It handles Studio packages perfectly.

However, there are restrictions to the size of any embedded Translation Memories:

Without a license file, the free copy of CafeTran Espresso that you download will run forever — but with the following limitations: You won’t be able to work with TM files that are larger than 1000 TU’s in size (in total), and you will not be able to make use of glossaries that are larger than 500 terms (in total). To remove those limitations, you need a license file generated specifically for your computer.

Try these URLs:

http://www.omegat.org/ (free)
http://www.my-across.net/en/ ("free")
http://wordfast.com/ (free for small jobs)

The site www.wordfast.org no longer exists -- it was for a pirate version of Wordfast.

The original question from 2009 was for a free version of Trados. The only free versions of Trados are torrented (pirated) versions. A replier tried to indicate other programs that he believed are similar to Trados, but in actual fact none of the programs mentioned (OmegaT, Across, Wordfast) are similar to Trados.

Let's be more precise Apr 6, 2016

The mentioned site was run by the italian company http://www.logos.net/. The version they made available was WordFast 3.35x and it was not a pirated version, but a free version quite outdated for that time.

I want to make clear that I didn't (and don't) recommend pirated software.

A replier tried to indicate other programs that he believed are similar to Trados, but in actual fact none of the programs mentioned (OmegaT, Across, Wordfast) are similar to Trados.

Back in 2009 my post read:

There are several other alternatives in the market able to emulate and even surpass the TRADOS functions and to handle TRADOS files, without the price tag and the recurrent actualizations.

I have enough time in this trade to know what is similar to Trados and what is not. It is clear that at that time I was mentioning alternatives to TRADOS, not look-alikes.

Nowadays, I would suggest MateCAT as a very good alternative to TRADOS, being free, online, and able to handle its proprietary formats (sdlxliff, ttx).

Saludos
