STUDIO 2009 - Satellite version

The facts:
  • Job created by SUITE 2007 (TTX – RTF - DOC) < = >
Freelance (Trados 5, 6, 6.5, 7, SDL Trados 2007, SDL Trados 2007 Suite, SDL Trados Studio 2009, and nearly all the CAT tools from the competition) + End clients, Copyeditors, Domain specialists, DTP...
  • Jobs created by STUDIO 2009 (SDLXLIFF) < = >
...Only Freelance equipped and skilled with SDL Trados Studio 2009 (no backward compatibility).

The problems:
  1. As an LSP willing to adopt STUDIO 09 now, we are not happy to push freelancers to buy Studio ’09 in order to share projects, nor want to renounce valuable collaborations (e.g. see one of these cases).
  2. LSP & FL need to offer end clients the ability to sign-off the translations. The “Print preview” – improved as to TE – works still below the level of the competition, since it still does not serve as a valuable Export/Import feature (e.g. see "Already Seen" case).
  3. Getting rid of the past bilingual Word files, Studio doesn’t seem to offer a valid alternative to share bilingual documents: actually the receiver (previously one of the millions MS Word users) should be Studio equipped & skilled, in order to handle SDLXLIFF bilingual files within the fully paid & complex freelance Studio edition.
A bit too much for a copyeditor, an end client or a domain specilist...isn't it?

The competition solution:
Nearly all CAT tools (surely, all the leading ones) cope with these problems issuing a Free Satellite version that can only "open & basically process" the packages sent by the outsourcer.

Our idea:
PLAIN SDLXLIFF EDITOR ISSUED IN A FREE SATELLITE (very light and easy to install):
  • The satellite editor simply opens SDL Packages and/or pretranslated SDLXILFF documents and let the unskilled user read/translate/proofread/sign-off the content.
  • Being free, this editor should not be able to process TM, create Termbase, use or build Autosuggest dictionaries, and will not benefit from QuickPlace, Real time preview, SDL file filters and any other functions that obviously have to be bought.
  • Also, the user interface should have very few buttons, so that it would be very user-friendly and perfectly suited for end clients, "not-yet-updated" freelancers, anti-CAT translators, domain specialists, DTP, copyeditors and almost everyone needing to join the production chain occasionally.

Our wish:
We consider ourself Trados devoted since we bought this cat before SDL.
We do think this is a very good tool, and we know it could be further improved. Therefore - if you consider this suggestion to be an actual improvement of the tool - we invite you to let SDL know, adding your comment here and voting this idea at their valuable ideas.com website (the "idea" is currently being examined by SDL staff: the link will be posted asap!)

Hi Renato,
I know MemoQ can do this, I know Transit XV could do this. Can WordFast do this? Certainly not Transit NXT: the "Satellite" version now costs a little under € 300.

You can add Deja Vu X Editor to the list.

"A free, fully functional download for freelancers working on satellites generated in a client's Workgroup edition"

------------------------
And there was a free version of SDLX (Light)

...the leading ones, AFAIK Aug 26, 2009

Hi Stanislav, thanks for your question!

This gives me the chance to further investigate this detail...And so:

Across:
Across offers a valid and stable solution for one of the most important today' Translation Management System (furthermore the freelancer training is free).

Deja Vu:
A project created in Deja Vu X can be processed by freelancers using DVX Satellite Editor.
Also, as I mentioned in the starting post, DVX (both Professional and Workgroup) can print the TUs of the job (all or just the selected ones) into a MS WORD editable table, where external members could then insert their translation, make their proofread or comments (comments are stored in a separate column!)...everything is then checked by the PM through the DVX interface and finally imported into the TM.

Wordfast:
Wordfast offers a free full-licence for jobs below the 500 TUs.
Furthermore it has the ANYWHERE free features.

MemoQ:
As you said, Kilgrays offers the "MemoQ4free" and "MemoQ Postcardware".

Star Transit:
I remember about a free Satellite PE Edition I have used for some projects...
(Thanks for your update about NXT! Sad to know that Star has left the leading way then!)

SDL Passolo and other localization tools create Bundles for free editors.

...It seems to me that we have a trend here: Team and/or LSP willing to collaborate with "external members" can do this Freely and Easly thanks to these CATs.

Having said that, I would like to know your contribution related to the heart of the present topic (problems 1-2-3, suggested solution, alternative solution)? Any chance?

MetaTexis Lite Aug 26, 2009

MetaTexis Lite is another free CAT program for translators.

And even Trados (previous versions) has a functional demo version, which can be used to pre-segment files for translation with other CAT tools, e.g. DVX. AFAIK, the current version cannot be used for this purpose, since the program does not open when the evaluation time expires.

Yep Aug 27, 2009

Hi Renato and Selcuk,
thanks for reminding me. I have completely forgotten about DejaVu (never used it) and Across (abandoned it for MS SQL Server issues). As for Passolo and SDLX Lite, I didn't mention them intentionally: the former is a localization tool, the latter obviously a sunset product which is only going to be patched but not developed further.
Wordfast: the 500 TUs limitation is obviously for demo purposes, not for production really.

I'm not sure whether we really have a trend here though: while some developers (MemoQ, Across, DejaVu) do follow the "Full and Satellite" solution, others have just abandoned it (StarTransit, SDL).

All in all, I don't dislike the idea, but I'm not keen on it either: on the one hand, many LSPs would probably be pleased to have a free editor for their translators; on the other hand, as a translator myself, I like having full functionality even if I have to pay for it.

I have voted for your idea anyway (for the LSPs' sake).

Hi Stanislav,
once again thanks for your post: this new one gives me the opportunity to clarify a very important point: the Satellite ("free bare editor") we are here proposing is needed mainly because it "barely edits" and secondly because it "frees".

If you have just 1 minute to read this post, you will understand that the very first goal is the immediate spreading of Studio, not obtaining free licenses!

The designed "backward compatibility" is a big big big problem: Studio is perfect for what the translation chain could become tomorrow, but is completely useless for what the translation chain is today (except a few working scenarios, as yours for example).

We are just proposing a bridge to take the "Future into the Present"...
Nobody here is thinking to process entire jobs through a satellite editor (obviously a "Full translator" will always be preferred to a "Satellite translator"): but thanks to the availability of Satellite editors, LSPs could start preprocessing jobs in Studio and send them out as SDLXLIFF Project Packages TODAY! (the availability of SDLXLIFF providers today would not be a problem at all!)...
...And final clients willing to proofread internally the translations (HP has Trados in house, but "Nice Travel & co" has not, nor they could ever spend 800 eur and learn a so complicated tool!) could read the source and target nicely published side by side and make desired amends and comments the easy way STUDIO (Satellite) is actually able to offer...MS Word would not be of any need then (becoming an "obsolete" solution!)

Thanks to a Satellite Version, the ENTIRE translation chain will have a valid alternative in Studio the day after it will be released!
(...obviously SDL will have to solve the crashes and all of the other problems, but I know they are working hard on this!...And...yes! Studio server products, please!)

And so: thanks for your vote!
I got it for the sake of Studio and for the sake of all of the people that would benefit from its immediate spreading (SDL, LSP, Translators, Providers, Clients, etc) ...May we hope for your support as well?
