I'm a new user to SDL Trados; I'm using SDL Trados Freelance 2009.

I'm having a problem where it refuses to open certain files because the program it tries to use is not installed. Is there a way to tell Trados which program to use for an extension? It's not as if, for example, Adobe is the only company that makes programs that can work with PDFs.

I'm quite amazed that it doesn't understand windows' file associations, really.

Thanks to anybody who can help with this!

File issues Aug 28, 2009

Hi Maria,
in certain cases, such as Word or Excel, Trados needs these applications to be installed so it can open them. As far as I know, there is no other way. But I may be exactly wrong...

Found a workaround Aug 28, 2009

First of all, thanks for the response.

I've found a workaround but it won't work if The Program and the one installed in the translator's computer aren't in good speaking terms.

Say you get files in .doc and use Open Office. Open the files from Open Office; save them using OO's native formats: Trados will now happily open them. Remember to use OO again to switch the final files back to .doc when you're done.
