I am a new user on Trados and have now been asked by my client to state discounts for fuzzy matches, 100% matches and repetitions. Are there any standard discounts? I have heard about the 30/60/100 rule, but am not sure I completely understand it.

Can anyone give me some advice please?

No standard Sep 10, 2009

Hi Mari,

There is no standard for Trados discounts. They can be anywhere between 0% and 100%. But here is an explanation of the 30/60/100 rule:

Discounts? Why? Sep 10, 2009

It's charming how agencies try to make it look like it's only natural that they should get return on your investment. Do you seriously want to cut your rates because you purchased a pricey tool that helps you make your translations more consistent? Spend some money now so you can charge less for your services in the future... Wise!

Hi Mary,

This question is very frequent. You can use the "search forum" and look for similar threads (enter "fuzzy rates" or "trados rates", for instance).

A few examples:

Nadejda and Hynek summed it up nicely Sep 10, 2009

There is no standard, and I don't see why you someone else should get the return on your investment.

Since you are new to Trados, there is something you need to be aware of: 100% matches. These are translation units (source segments with matching target segments) that are already in the memory you are working with--you only need to apply these to your translation. If that memory was created by someone else, you can't guarantee its accuracy, can you? You can't be responsible for someone else's work. So, if an agency asks you for rebates on 100% matches, only accept if you don't have to review/correct them. If you are required to review/correct those, make sure you charge at least your normal reviewing rate. However, in my mind, ethics require that I don't use 100% matches without reviewing them--I consider I am responsible for submitting a translation that is healthy overall. Be careful!

And if things get really that bad, make sure that the segments have been "locked" by the agency so you cannot modify them... You never know!icon_wink.gif

100% match with an empty memory Nov 11, 2009

Can anybody explain why I get some 100% matches with a totally empty TM? I know for certain it is empty because I created it just before analysis...

Hi, these can be segments containing only placeables, such as a number or a date.

I don't think it's luck. I think it is because I don't use Trados. In fact, I wouldn't use Trados even if it was free because the result seems to be that people want discounts.icon_wink.gif

I wouldn't call this a discount... Nov 11, 2009

I'd rather call it a reduced rate. Why would you charge 100% for a context match, i.e. a match where the previous and the following sentences are the same? Why would you charge 100% for a segment where you change one word of ten?

I think it is because I don't use Trados.

I think you should re-word your statement to "I think it is because I don't use CAT tools". Is that right?

I use Wordfast on nearly every project - but nobody asks me for fuzzy discounts. I have the impression that the type of agencies that try to extract these discounts are only interested in Trados users. Wordfast seems to have the same effect as a string of garlic - it keeps the vampires away.icon_cool.gif

At least in my case when I lost my re-licensing right after three years of using WF. Why should I buy one and the same tool again?

My experience too...
It looks like PM's just don't bother to even ask what e.g. .TMX files are, when it is ssoooooo convenient to handle .TMW and the like.
Sorry for confirming John's experience, but no agency has ever asked me for FMD's when I said/wrote the "garlimagical" word Wordfast or, more recently, Heartsome. How come?
