Hi again

Yet another TM question: how do I convert a TM sent to me as a text file into something that Trados will appreciate and understand?

Cheers,

Dan

Create a new TM and import the txt file Dec 30, 2009

That's it, basically.
Just make sure to create the new TM with the same source/target languages as in the txt file, and Bob's your Uncle.

Error messages? Dec 30, 2009

Curious.
Did you get any error messages of any kind, or is the TM simply empty after import?

If it's empty, check the file size before import - perhaps the TM is actually empty. Happened to me once. The client thought it was a good thing to send a prefab TM. Hmmmm.

Oh - oh - oh just remembered something:
Are you absolutely sure this txt file came from a Trados export?
Some years ago I received txt exports from Wordfast that would (on paper) import directly to Trados, but no such luck! No idea why. Wordfast can now export in tmx format, I believe, so I would ask the client for that instead if this is what's causing the problem.

no error messages Dec 30, 2009

It goes through the process of importing the txt file, but then I get a report which reads:

Read 2071, Imported 0 Errors 0

did you choose "translator's workbench" format?icon_wink.gif

Try Apsic Xbench (it is free) and convert the TXT into TMX. An then import into Trados. Period.

Please see editions to my reply Dec 30, 2009

It seems that editing a reply does not mean that a new notice is being sent.

Please see my previous reply - new suggestion!icon_wink.gif

Open the txt file and save as tmx? Dec 30, 2009

Just a thought.

Otherwise, browsing the forums for 'txt to tmx' mentions Olifant (Okapi) as the solution - converting txt to tmx.

Best of luck.

File - Import - OK - in the "Open Import File" dialog, bottom line (Workbench txt is set as default though).

Perhaps you could paste start / one line from the txt file here to see what you have? (You can change the content not to disclose anything, just keep the formatting tags.)

Trados or Studio Dec 30, 2009

Studio can import only tmx, tmx.gz, sdlxliff and itd formats. It is surprising but Studio cannot import (Trados) Translator's Workbench (txt) files.

---------------

First create a TM in Trados (2007) and try to import this txt file. If it works, then export your Trados 2007 TM as a TMX file and import it to Studio.

I'm not sure if this helps, but if this is really some "special" Wordfast TM, they (Wordfast) offered a limited free version in the past, perhaps that could be useful for conversion (if there is an option for that)?

Possible solution Dec 31, 2009

Create a new Trados memory with the same languages as your txt file.
Export the empty memory.
Open the received txt file and delete the header lines up to where the translated segments start.
Open the txt file you created.
Copy the header lines.
Paste in the received txt file.
Import this new txt file into your empty memory.

Hope it works.

Marijke

Go to http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/wordfast/ and suscribe to the group.
At the file section you will find a file with the name Wf2TMX, download and use it to convert WF TMX files. It is quite easy to use.
