I started to translate a document and I was using the Open/get and Set/close options only as I am not very experienced with this package. Then I do not know what I did but now brackets and a 0 in between appear everytime I select the options above. When I set and close, the brackets stay there. Can anybody help please?? I am also working with workbench.

Wendy

This is pretty normal Jan 4, 2010

Please take some look at the tutorials shipped with your software and also the manual.
What you describe are so called "segment delimiters"

Please make sure you do not destroy or modify such characters Jan 4, 2010

Should you delete or modify them, you will not be able to cleanup your document.

Some basics:

  • Keep non-printable characters (like a tab or the "inverted P" for paragraph) visible, this will ensure that you do not damage somethin
  • Get used to the view of source and target at the same time, because if you do you are on the safer side, not challenging yourself not to destroy delimiters
  • Use "Open/Get" for the first segment
  • Use "Set/close next open/get" for the next segment - when you point with the mouse to the Trados toolbar, you should see a tooltip with the name of the command
  • The shortcut for "Open/get" is "ALT+HOME", the shortcut for "Set/close next open/get" is "ALT+NUM+"
  • Translate the text. After you are done use the function "Cleanup" in the Workbench (Tools - Cleanup) to remove the source text from your document. It is VERY advisable to keep a copy of untouched original document and fully translated document and another copy for cleanup. What I mean is, that you should save the original document in a folder of your choice. Then create twi subfolders there and call them for example "Work" and "Target". Copy the file in the "Work" folder. Start translating this one. After you're done copy the translated file to "Target" folder. Then cleanup that one.
  • If you follow my previous advice even if you get in trouble with cleanup you will not lose your work.

Should you get in trouble, post again.

I have a Trados manual online, which may help you a little bit - you can download it here.
