Hi

How do you send a translated document from SDL Trados Studio 2009 to another translator for review?

I guess is is under Project (create return package), but this is greyed out. What do I do?

Thanks

Probably you have version for Freelancers Jan 26, 2010

AFAIK this option is not available in version for freelancers (as 'normally' such activities would be performed by PM not a freelancer).

Best Regards
Stanislaw

Edited to add:

However you can always send another translator the translated sdlxliff file (and should it be required separately a TM)

update memory Jan 26, 2010

Thanks Stanislaw!

Could you also please tell me how we keep the memory up to date if we both keep adding to it?

Thanks!

As you don't use this TM at the same time Jan 26, 2010

It's not too difficult it just involves a lot sending back and forth

First you create a separate TM for the project (Studio allows you to use several TM at the same time and update all of them).

When you finish translation you send sdlxliff file along with this TM to the proofreader who also may use it as the only TM or along his own TM - what is important is that in settings he checks the box "update" next to this TM to you.

Alternatively - what actually could be easier - he/she can just send you back sdlxliff file and in your TM menu you can right click on the TM you want to keep up to date, choose import and choose as a file to be imported the proofread sdlxliff file - if your TM does not allow multiple translations for one segment it should update your TM.

Best Regards
Stanislaw

Any how-to from SDL? Jan 26, 2010

I wonder if SDL has written a clear document describing the different ways that translation agency/translator/proofreader can handle the process and communication flow.
I have tried to get a clear process from the translation agency who imposed it to me, but they don't have one (experimenting, I think).
I have the impression that the agency can provide either a Project Package or raw files, and the way we should handle that differs.
In particular, when the translator validates the changes made by the proofreader, what is the right procedure, so that the translator can easily spot the differences (by the way, I find it much more painful than with Track Changes mode in Word).
I have noted, too, that I can create a Return Package only when I have created a Project Package. But I suspect that only the agency can handle a Return Package, not directly a proofreader.

There is a separate manual for PMs Jan 26, 2010

I believe that you may find answer to some of your questions there (it should be available from your account at sdl.com). Still I believe that when it comes to managing projects functionality of freelance version is significantly reduced (for instance from what I see one cannot export project files).

emailing the sdlxliff file Jan 28, 2010

Hello, this may sound like a daft question, but if I email the sdlzliff file it should work on the other Trados, right?
Also, what happens if you have 2009 and the agency has an older version. Should it still work? Or should you do something to convert it?

If they have older versions Jan 29, 2010

You will have to email TTX files back and forth and yes it should work with the Studio format. See: http://www.proz.com/forum/sdl_trados_support/156407-transferring_from_trados_2009_to_2007.html

Studio has 3 roles - Open for translation, review and sign-off. You can find these in "Files", right click document. In the freelance version I just use them when I am checking the doc before sending it my agency client. So if you both have Studio you can use those roles to update your TM.

Otherwise you need an online TM that you both access simultaneously. Not sure how to set one of those up though.

Can you explain

"Studio has 3 roles - Open for translation, review and sign-off. You can find these in "Files", right click document." please?

I couldn't do this.

Many thanks
