Hello,

Many of the jobs posted at ProZ list SDLTrados specifically as part of the job requirement. Does this simply mean that the translator will be expected to work with and produce files associated with Trados? I ask because I am under the impression that several other CAT tools and filters can process these same files. What I would like to know is whether it would be unwise for a translator familiar with format filters to go ahead and submit quotes for these Trados-specific postings if he or she isn't using Trados. Any advice offered will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Indeed it is true that many outsourcers, especially direct clients, think, that Trados (or Studio, as it now called) is a prerequisite for quality. They believe freelance translators that do not own this piece of software are inferior to those that do. This is nonsense.

Very often those customers send you not even a tm but only pdf-files or Word-files with the source text. "Be sure to use Trados!"

But there are many cases where the specific software is really important. When it is part of the work-flow.

So you should always mention that you are able to provide quality translation though you do not own "Trados". But without Trados or Studio you are not able to deliver TMs or use TMs specific to the software, only tmx.

Regards

Heinrich
