When entering a placeable Workbench automatically changes font to "symbol" (Word)

Help!

I was working on a Word document then, after a few pages and not having changed any settings, when I inserted a placeable the font in Word was automatically changed to "symbol". This means anything I type comes out in greek mathematical characters!

I have tried resetting the whole doc format to Times New Roman (the "original" font) but every time I use the enter placeable function it changes it back.

Any ideas?
