I have Multiterm 8.1.1264.0 SP2 running (or rather not running) on Vista Business SP2 32-bit
I have Studio 2009 Freelance and Suite 2007 Freelance

I open the program.
I open a termbase
I click on add new entry/activate editing mode
The program closes immediately.

Great! Thanks SDL!

Remedial action:
SDL Knowledgebase: can't find anything
Wiki: something similar (program hanging in that case); recommends deleting 3 files from UserProfiles, but this folder is empty on my machine.
Have reinstalled (no difference)

Homer Simpson moment: Doh!

Puzzling: it is possible to add to the termbase from Word (Office 2007)

Would it help to reinstall SP1?
Do I have to activate this program separately?

Java¿ Apr 30, 2010

maybe one of the latest Java updates is the culprit to blame?

Could be the problem Apr 30, 2010

Thanks for that suggestion, Sergei.

An additional detail that I found later:
In Synergy, when I click on Create New Termbase, Open Termbase or Extract Terminology, I get the error message: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Looking at forum posts, I note this is a very common error message, though it is difficult to see a common linking factor.

I have deleted the 3 xml files (BaseSettings.xml, Plugincache.xml, UserSettings.xml)
in C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL MultiTerm\8.1.0.0 but this does not help.

I am not keen on uninstalling Java versions but I suppose I will have to look into it.

(Correction to my previous post: I couldn't find the files because I didn't have 'Show hidden files' checked. [Doh!])

You do not have to uninstall any Java versions Apr 30, 2010

You open up Java, go to "Extended" or "Advanced" (whatever it is called in English), open up Java Plug-ins and uncheck the box that you find there.

You can also deactivate the latest update (ending in "17") without uninstalling it.

Yes, this may well fix the problem.

Java control panel malfunction Apr 30, 2010

Hi Astrid,
Thank you for intervening.

Slight problem: the Java control panel will not open: I click/double click, and it doesn't react. I may have to reinstall Java from their website and then report back.

Currently I have Java 6 Update 18. Java's manual download page is offering Update 20. Of course, it might make the problem worse...

As I understand, you need to go back to Version 14 Apr 30, 2010

Hi Richard,

I do not know why your Java control panel does not open. However, Multiterm works a whole lot better with Update 14.

Try not to have any Java version beyond 14 activated.

And good luck!

Astrid

MultiTerm problem resolved - Synergy interface not working May 1, 2010

Hi Astrid

Thank you for your recommendation: I went back to Java 6 Update 14

Good news: Multiterm and its interface with Word are now working.

(although Word gave me a run-time error when I tried to add an entry to the Sample glossary - Run-time error '91' Object variable or With block variable not set [Is that because it's locked for editing I wonder?]. I can add to/edit my own glossary.)

Synergy is still giving me the above-mentioned error message when I try to create/edit/extract, so this looks like a separate problem. Further investigation required there.

Conclusion: looks like Java was the problem. Version 6.14 is ok.

I hope the SDL engineers will work to make their software compatible with higher versions of Java since we are missing out on security enhancements.

Thank you very much for your help.

I hope this is useful to others too.

pps: I'm getting strange security warnings from Windows about various parts of my security software being switched off but when I open up the program it assures me these components are on. I guess this could have something to do with the reversion to Java 6.14.
It will be interesting to see if that persists.
I don't particularly want to choose between a fully functioning Trados and a fully functioning Windows system.

Well, I do not get any strange security warnings May 1, 2010

... and I have Java 6.14.

I think that must be a different problem.

Synergy won't be working May 2, 2010

Hi Richard,
just to add a piece of info: the MultiTerm link from Synergy won't be working in future. The links are intended for MultiTerm 2007 and do not work with MT 2009.

As for extracting terminology, please note that you will need a separate license for MultiTerm Extract to use it (provided you have not purchased the CCM Methodology Pack which already contains this license).

Free-standing MultiTerm is ok May 3, 2010

Hi Stanislav,

Thank you for those useful pieces of information.

As long as MultiTerm works as a free-standing application, I can live without the link from Synergy. Thanks for saving me the trouble of investigating it further.

Thankfully, I haven't had any more security warnings.

Richard
