I am translating (for the second time) some mif files that were converted into ttx files using S-tagger so I can work with them using Tag Editor. The translation is English into Portuguese.

Sometimes, though, I need to eliminate tags that are not used in Portuguese. For instance:
"closed-center hydraulic system". The hyphen between "closed" and "center"disappears in Portuguese. The first time I translated these files I simply deleted the tag. However, when I tried to convert them back to mif, it didn't work (I really don't remember the message, but I run an analysis and it pointed to the deleted tag as the reason).

So I was wondering if there's another way to work around this, as leaving the tag, at the end, leads to a "wrong" translation (or, at least, with something that doesn't mean anything, as the hyphen).

I searched online and couldn't find anything either.

I'd appreciate any help, even if it's a reference/URL I can check and learn better.

Thanks
Fernando

Switch tag protection / verification off Jul 3, 2010

In the various menus for this you should deactivate tag protection and tag verification and leave it off when saving the transated file. Then try to save the file as .mif again. Does this help?

I believe you turn off the tag protection by clicking the padlock icon on the toolbar and follow the instructions, and the verification is, I think, under Tools > Options or something. Sorry, I cannot give the correct path right now.

I haven't done the conversion myself... Jul 3, 2010

but every time I've translated FM files converted to RTF or TTX, it has always been ok to delete hyphens or hard spaces, and the agencies never complained. What's important is that you remove those tags from the translation, not the source. Maybe you should check your settings in S-Tagger? There are some options for source and target hyphenation there.

Deleting hyphens does not stop the conversion Jul 4, 2010

You may delete non-braking spaces or hyphens in Framemaker texts witho no problem.
You would need to know exactly what the message said for tag deletion, as it most certainly referred to another tag deletion.
