What is the difference between SDL trados and SDLX?

What is exactly the second? it seems to be part of the SDL Trados software package.

SDLX = old product, SDL = software producer Aug 21, 2010

But I think you are reffering to SDLX or Studio.
Indeed, the GUI seems to be very similar both in SDLX and Studio, but this is just a first impression.
While SDLX is an old product, accompanying Trados 2007, Studio is the successor of both SDLX and Trados 2007.
The differences are huge - as for any new versus old product.

SDL Aug 23, 2010

SDL = Company name
SDLX = Cat tool produced by SDL
SDL Trados = CAT suite containing both Trados and SDLX
SDL Studio = New CAT solution that is said to be compatible with previous products but is totally different.

Now, it is clear to me.
But, what are the differences between SDLX and trados which are contained both in the same suite.

SDLX - different GUI, single application.
Trados 2007 - different GUI, multiple aplications.
Studio 2009 - different GUI, single application.

It has to do with history Aug 24, 2010

But, what are the differences between SDLX and trados which are contained both in the same suite.

A bit of history might help here. Years ago there was a German company named Trados, founded in Stuttgart by two clever students who developed a software to help translators doing their job. The company marketed two main products: Multiterm for terminology management and Trados Workbench as a CAT tool.

A bit more up in the north there was another company named SDL, which was mainly active as a supplier of translation services. To support this activity, it developed also some products for translators, one of them being the CAT tool named SDLX.

Around 2005, this British company SDL decided to acquire the German company Trados GmbH and they merged to a new company named SDL Trados.

Both companies had their own range of products and they promised their (new enlarged) customer base that hey would let these two range of products converge to one common offering. Obviously, such a process usually takes years. So, for about 4 years we still had both product ranges available, but to make it easier, the company decided to bundle the former SDL product called SDLX with the former Trados product named Trados into one commercial product. This is why when you bought the CAT tool, you received both products.

Studio 2009 is the first completely new product that has been developed by the merged company and that is not a legacy product of any of the former partners.

Hope this helps understand a bit how all this fits together.

Walter
