Hello,

can anyone tell me how I can find out the number of words that are included in my TM? I use Trados 2007.

Thank you!

Dear Peter,

Thank you for your reply. "Reorganise" is greyed out for me. Any idea why?

Best regards,
Britta

units only Aug 26, 2010

Oops, I didn't open the TM in exclusive mode. I can now click on "Reorganise". However it only tells me the number of units, not words.

Any other ideas?

Look at the Properties Aug 26, 2010

If you click on 'File - Properties', it will show you the number of TUs and the size of the physical TM file in KBs. I do not know of any way to see the number of words, but wondering why you would need this?

Walter

words Aug 26, 2010

Hello Walter,

My client asked me to revise a full TM and he wants me to suggest a lump sum. However, as I have no idea how many words the TM includes, I have no basis for calculationicon_frown.gif

Export the TM content and make a word count Aug 26, 2010

The only way I can think of now for doing this would be to use one of the available export tools discussed here recently and to do a word count on the export file (e.g. Excel).

This may be a good choice anyway for the revision work or how did you plan to do this? With the 'Maintenance' function of Workbench? Not very comfortable in my opinion.

You may also use one of the commercially available tools for TM maintenance, such as Error Spy from DOG.

Walter

Export as delimited text file Aug 26, 2010

Many TM managers of CAT tools have option of "Export as delimited text file." In one instance you get a text file and count total words of the TM with Word or Excel. No special tags are included in counts.

If the TM is not too long.. Aug 26, 2010

You can count at a speed of 10.000 words/min following this procedure:
1. Open a new Word file and click on Edit/Office clipboard.
2. Open your TM in Translator Workbench and go to File/Maintenance.
3. In the Maintenace window write 99 in the box „Translation units processed at a time”.
4. Click „Begin search”.
5. Click on the first letter of the text that appears and press Shift+Ctrl+End then Ctrl+C. (The first 99 TU is on the clipboard)
6. Click „Next” and repeat 5., but maximum 23 times.
7. Go to Word and click „Paste All” to paste all the TU-s into Word.
If you wish to count the words separately, convert the text into a two column table and count the source or the target column.
