Dear all,

we are facing the following phenomenon and appreciate your help for a solution.
Segmentation of an XML source changes between these examples. Tags shown in ''!

Example 1 (working well)

XML Source
...
This is a 'emphasis'bold '/emphasis'and lonely word.
'emphasis'This is a bold sentence. '/emphasis'
...

Segmentation result
...
This is a bold and lonely word.
This is a bold sentence.
...

Example 2 (is this a bug or a feature?)

XML Source
...
'emphasis'This is a bold sentence. '/emphasis'
This is a 'emphasis'bold '/emphasis'and lonely word.
...

Segmentation result
...
1 This is a bold sentence.
2 This is a
3 bold
4 and lonely word.
...

Do you know where to find a solution? Do we have to change something in our translation memory or to set a definition for inline and stucture tags or is this a Trados bug? Thanks for your help!

Technical Details:
SDL Trados 2009
Windows XP Notebook
XML file is exportet by smart media creator 3.0 from expert communictations.

Standard file definition "XML any" Sep 13, 2010

Thanks to your question we found out that we used the standard file definition XML any and how to create a new file definition where we defined our tag as an "inline" tag. That means no segmentation should follow after that tag.

Still it is not clear for us how to assign the file definition to the source file in file view or project view. Tests did not work. Trados Studio 2009 still recognizes the source file as XML any.

If anyone has tips on the how-to-procedure, this is appreciated.

Thank you.

Uncheck the XML definitions you don't want to use Sep 13, 2010

Still it is not clear for us how to assign the file definition to the source file in file view or project view

Studio normally detects automatically which file definition should be used by looking at the XML file and the available XML file types. You can however influence this process in two ways in the Project Settings:

a) By unchecking all the file types you don't want Studio to apply to your document.
b) By assigning priorities to the file types. You do this by moving the file types up and down using the up and down arrow. Top of the list is highest priority.

In order to check which file type is being used for your document, click on the fourth blue diamond button for tag details (this is the one that shows tag IDs). If you do this, the orange tag that indicates the start and end of a document and which normally shows the name of the document will now show the name of the assigned file type definition, allowing you to check whether Studio has assigned the correct file type to your document.

Define a modification of xml any Sep 13, 2010

Thanks for that well structured information.

Now we know how to apply a file type
but realized our definition does not work.

So we must go a step back and define a file type
that ist just a slight modification of the XML any file type.
It just differs from XML any in the point that it recognizes the
tag 'emphasis' as an inline tag.

If someone knows resources that describe this procedure well, please let us know.

Thank you.

Done! Sep 13, 2010

Now it works:

The solution was to copy the content of the XML any file type
via a text editor and save the new file type.
Then defined our tag as an inline tag via the Trados Assistant.

Thanks for all your help.
