Hi all,
I recently purchased Trados SP3 - also received SP2 and SDL 2007.
Now, I am by far no expert with Trados, but I think I ran into quite an issue.
I already have some experience with Trados 2007 and with Tag Editor, so I

Tag Editor, however, would not let me edit the .ttx. The tag protection was off
but the Open/Get icon was not turned on, only the Open icon was in the edit bar.
I also has Workbench open, but nothing.
The .ttx file was a .docx in origin.
Lastly, I add, that my version is registered online at the Trados site; and this problem
ocurred with SP3, not with 2007.
Am I missing something here, or are there any objective problems.
Quite grateful for the help!

A clarification here: Tag Editor forms part of 2007, not Studio 2009 SP3.

So see if Tag Editor is working properly, open any word file in Tag Editor and save as a ttx. If this works properly then your application is OK and therefore the file your client sent you is the problem. Ask your client to send you the original file (the .docx) and create your own ttx.

If your client doesn't send you the original format, you won't be able to save the ttx in any other format except ttx because Tag Editor uses the original file when you use the "save as target" function after translating the ttx.

Re: ttx in Studio 2009. You can only open ttx's in Studio, but not create them there.

Hope this is all a bit clearer now.

Is the Workbench opened? Oct 18, 2010

Tag Editor, however, would not let me edit the .ttx. The tag protection was off
but the Open/Get icon was not turned on, only the Open icon was in the edit bar.
I also has Workbench open, but nothing.

I have seen this problem in these circumstances:

a) The Workbench is not open.

b) The workbench has been opened after TagEditor and there is no connection between them: try the "Connect to Workbench" command in the "Workbench" menu.

c) The Workbench is open but no translation memory has been opened.

d) More than one instance of the Workbench has been opened.

e) The source or target languages in the translation memory do not match the source or target language in the TTX.

Are none of these applicable in your case?

Daniel

Thanks to both Emma and Daniel, your explanations seem to have shed some light on the matter.
I am going to try with a series of files on Tag Editor to pin point the possible problem, but I feel that it falls into Daniel's options.
I find that Tag Editor is really only useful when translating web sites, anyone feel the same? I usually prefer, and work on, word based projects.

TagEditor is useful for all kind of texts. When used properly you circumvent all problems which do appear in Word.

Jerzy clarification please. Oct 19, 2010

Jerzy, would you be as so kind to add some context to your claims.
I am rather interested in hearing of such comparison.
Otherwise, could you post a link on a relevant discussion?
Thanks

Numerous postings around font changes in Word here Oct 19, 2010

Due to lack of time I will not elaborate on that further.
Put in a nutshell:
Tageditor allows you to translate all supported formats in a simple and always the same way.
Formatting changes do not occur. You have integrated QA checker options there.
Please also look around in this forum, you will find a lot of topics dealing with that.
