Hi folks.

So having previously worked as a project manager, I've decided to have a go at carrying out translations myself. I potentially have the funds to purchase Trados 2009 and so I've downloaded the 30-day trial version today.

As I am new to translation, I appreciate that many clients will be reluctant to offer me work. Therefore, I'm looking to translate works as a hobby so that I can get my wordcount number increased etc... I was looking to translate a newspaper article a day but think that this will not be of benefit. Similarly, this won't give me the opportunity to develop a comprehensive translation memory in Trados.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how best to gain experience doing translations using TM? Should I focus on a core topic that I wish to eventually specialise in (ie. chemistry) and start translating source documents relating to this topic, thereby developing relevant TMs?

Many thanks

PS: I appreciate this isn't Trados specific but didn't know where else this topic should siticon_smile.gif

Competition in translation jobs now are very severe. I recommend that you start with your excellent domains to operate as your strong points. Practicing with a new subject is what you had better do when you have a number of permanent clients.

I would recommend just translating anything and getting familiar with the software. So you probably wont have many matches to start but there is a lot more to using Trados than just matches. So get started - set up a TM, translate a document your previously saved in TagEditor, practice the whole workflow.

Then when you get real work you will be a whole lot less stressed.
