Dear all, When translating docx files (Office 2010) with Studio SP3 on a Win XP system, the language setting in the translated file is never changed. How can I make sure that the language is set correctly? I'd prefer to avoid the Word function to automatically detect the language, instead I'd rather have Studio set the correct language for every segment (so untranslated segments keep their language setting, which can be helpful when translating only parts of a document). Any help is greatly appreciated, regards, Erik ▲ Collapse

What do you mean by "language setting"? In Studio, the target text normally automatically has the language settings of the language defined in the Project settings as target language. This means that the real-time spellchecker works fine and also F7 works automatically with the correct language. I have never seen any case so far where this was not the case. If you experience another behaviour, please explain more in detail what is happening on your system. Walter

Dear Walter, Thanks for your time. I should have been more clear in my initial post. Also, this might even be the wrong forum for my problem. Anyway: The problem is that the target docx file translated into German, opened in Word, is still marked as being English (or whatever the source language was). I don't use the spellchecking function in Studio, as it is far inferior to the possibilities I have with third party spellcheckers in Word. ... See more Dear Walter, Thanks for your time. Hello Erik, this might happen, but for me it only happens rarely. The help is quite easy: press CTRL+A in Word to select the entire document and then change the document language.

I haven't worked with Studio, but AFAIK, .docx files are zipped .xml files. If you're technically inclined and want to find out exactly, what went wrong, change the file extension to .zip, unzip the file and have a look at the word folder. Any the following four files in this folder could have language definitions in them: document.xml styles.xml stylesWithEffects.xml settings.xml The language is coded as <w:themeFontLang w:val="en-US"/> in settings.xml and <w:lang w:val="en-US"/> in the other 3 files. My guess is that Studio probably only updates document.xml and maybe settings.xml. If that's the case, you may want to file a bug report. Hopefully, they'll fix it in the next service pack. In the meantime, Stanislav's suggestion should do the trick. Olaf

Dear Stanislav, Sure, that's what I'm doing all the time (as I wrote in my inital post). However, I find that quite cumbersome: - create the source language file in Studio and open the translated sdlxliff for proofing in Studio.
- in Word: CTRL-A, change language, untick "don't check spelling and grammar" and "automatically detect language" fields
- spellcheck in Word, manually make corrections in Studio
- after proofreading, create source language file in Studio again
- open it again in Word
- CTRL-A, change language in Word again
- send to client
I could spare steps 5 and 6 if Studio worked as supposed to. Regards, Erik

Dear Stanislav, Sure, that's what I'm doing all the time (as I wrote in my inital post). However, I find that quite cumbersome. I apologize, Erik. Missed that one. Two weeks ago or so I started using the SDLXLIFF Convertor which will create a bilingual file in Word, setting both the source and target language correctly. The enhancement compared to the Bilingual Preview Generator is that SDLXLIFF Convertor files can be imported back into Studio, including all changes made. Maybe that would spare you some of the steps?

[Upraveno: 2010-10-29 21:57 GMT] I haven't heard about that SDLXLIFF Convertor you're talking about. Sounds promising. Could you point me to more information about it? Kind regards, Erik

Hi Erik, yes, it's new and a successor to the Bilingual Preview Generator. I guess the official version will be released quite soon, but that's without guarantee, of course. I'm afraid I can't reveal more at this moment...

I have the problem you mention when I create a ttx to use in Studio. The target language of the final docx is not automatically recognised in Word (2010) until I select all and change the language. However, when I open a docx in Studio the target language of the final docx is recognised in Word automatically, and this saves me having to click through to change the language for spellchecking etc.
