Dear all,
one of our clients sent documents in FrameMaker format to be translated with Trados from English into Russian. The conversion from .mif to .ttx went well, now we got the first translated document back. We were able to convert the document (.ttx to .mif), apparently without any problems. Unfortunately, there is a font problem now (the text consists of special caracters only and is unreadable) which even with the help of Trados Font Mapper cannot seem to be solved. The only font used by our client is Arial so there shouldn't be any problem. Is anyone able to help?
Thank you very much in advance.

A number of factors need to be knows. FM 8.0 does not support many languages' Windows fonts. Trados 2007 MIF font mapper fails for many languages. The main reason is MIF use of Adobe fonts, not Windows fonts. FM 9.0 is heard to work betters with Trados 2007/2009. SDLX can do better for some languages + FM 7.0 combination.

FM and Trados versions

Dear Mr. Lupkitaro, we indeed work with Trados 2007 so there might be a general problem there. The FrameMaker version we use is 7.0 so SDLX might do better. Thank you.

Did you select Russian as the target language?
Dec 6, 2010
Re-check the following S-Tagger conversion settings:
Settings tab > Preferences > Character Set (should be Normal)
Settings tab > Document Language > Target Language (should be Russian)
If you used other settings, you might have to re-convert the .mif files and re-translate them.
If you did use the above settings, select Edit > Select All In Flow in FM and assign a Russian font, e.g. Arial CYR, or a Unicode font, e.g. Arial Unicode MS. (Your DTP specialist might have to do some additional fine-tuning.)

Use Font Mapper for Framemaker
Dec 6, 2010
The problem is on FM side AFAIK. FM 7 does not support Unicode, so you just need to change the font to one supporting cyrylic characters, ie. Arial CYR.
You can do it manually in Framemaker or better use Font Mapper.

Russian font

Dear Olaf and Jerzy,
we did everything correctly - and then got the font wrong! We chose "Arial CE" instead of "Arial CYR" so thank you very much for your help, you gave us the right clue.
