This is how it looks in TE when translating a Excel-table. When I press Space though, the normal space-sign is displayed.
Can I replace all these degree-signs with normal space characters?
When I look at the file in Excel, all looks normal.

Any suggestions?
Regards
Heinrich

non-breaking spaces Dec 10, 2010

These are non-breaking spaces (also called hard spaces). They are used to prevent line breaks. In German, these have to be used for example between numbers and units, or in dates.

I'd rather keep them unless you're sure the client really doesn't need them.

Kind regards,
Erik

Non-breaking space Dec 10, 2010

This is a non-breaking space to avoid splitting the sentence (to keep it on one line). Inserted with Ctrl+Shift+Space.

Try this Dec 10, 2010

In TE, go to Edit/Replace where Find: Alt+0176 and Replace with: space. Before that uncheck Tool/Options/Protection/Protect document. Of course, if you wish to replace them.
Before doing this, read the next post!

The information is correct, but the code wrong Dec 10, 2010

To get the non breaking space you need to enter ALT+0160, while ALT+0176 produces the degree sign °

Thanks Dec 10, 2010

I didn't know that, because I never had this before.
There are 30 pages of this stuff, so I will not bother to use non-breakable space but replace those with normal space. The texts are for software messages, and if the message does not fit it is the same if it breaks or not.
I can of course replace my spaces with the code when the translation is finished.
Will they have influence on the TM? Does Trados believe the text is a less than 100% match if the spaces differ? Not that it matters for this project.

But: When using Search and Replace, TE does not find any. Protection is off, but no find, either by copying or using Alt+0160.

If in source, a missing NBS will cause no 100% match Dec 10, 2010

AFAIR - but in fact not a big deal. For some languages hovewer ths space is critical and should be used often.

No guarantee... Dec 10, 2010

Perhaps this sign is a masculine ordinal indicator. Find: Alt+186.
