I'm using Studio 2009 and have a quick question. Is it possible to "ignore" a segment that does not need translating (i.e. where the source segment is unnecessary in the target language)?
When I leave the section blank (having pressed CTRL + ENTER to move to to the next segment), a red cross appears. Can I just leave it at that or do I need to do something else?
Thanks

P.S. It might also be helpful if there were some way to draw the client's attention to the fact that this segment has been "ignored" when I export the file back to Word. How could I do this in Studio? (I can only think of sending an accompanying note via email when I return the file.) ▲ Collapse

I either set the segments with hidden font attributes (e.g. in doc source texts) or lock the segments in Studio not to be translated/changed.

leave a space

If I don't want the original segment at all I usually add a space and move on. Studio will be happy with this (you won't get the error that you describe) and you won't get the original segment that you would if you leave it blank.
Just make sure that the single space doesn't spoil your translated format. If there is a danger of this happening, then add a character that doesn't come into your work and do a search & replace for it when you are checking your clean doc.

Two, or three, more ideas ;-)

Hello Wheatley,
You could simply copy source to target to avoid the red cross - alt+ins is the short cut for this, but don't confirm the segment. You could then lock them as suggested to make sure you don't inadvertently add them to your TM - shortcut would be ctrl+L

Hello Wheatley,
You could simply copy source to target to avoid the red cross - alt+ins is the short cut for this, but don't confirm the segment. You could then lock them as suggested to make sure you don't inadvertently add them to your TM - shortcut would be ctrl+L
You could also add a comment in Studio then use the SDLXLIFF Converter ( http://tinyurl.com/sdlxliffconverter ) to export the translation with comments as a word document for your customer. Shortcut for the comment is ctrl+shift+n but you need to do this before you lock them.
Or a final idea... encourage your Client to purchase a copy of Starter Edition and then he can review your work in the bilingual document and filter out the untranslated content himself.
