Hi all,
I get this message when trying to generate the target file.
''An error occurred while converting the document back to Microsoft Word format: Position of fields is/are changed across the paragraph".
I tried to disable the tag verification function in File Type feature, but it still doesn't work.
Thanks for your help

Disabling the verification just hides the errors from you Jan 13, 2011

The verification is there for your convenience, but not for converting.
It seems like would you have moved a field tag from one segment to another.
Enable tag verification, run the verifier and correct reported tag errors.
Should this not help, check if the untouched source file does save back, because it is not unlikely that it is already damaged.

Thanks Jerzy Jan 13, 2011

I will try that. But how do I save back the source file?

Save the source Word file in copy with a different name Jan 13, 2011

just to make sure you do not make any changes or damages to your translated file.

Then just open the copy of Word file and without translating it try to use the "Save target as" command. If it saves, then the file is OK, if it fails, you know that you do not have to correct the translation but to repair the source first.

I think I've found it Jan 13, 2011

The first time I tried to convert the Word file into a translatable file, it did not work. I looked for all the usual bugs and could not find any of them
Then I remembered I had to change the language of the document in the Word file, which was apparently typed in English in a Word document set at German language.
Then I just realised a few minutes ago that header and footer were also set in German language and thus changed them as well.
Then I reopened the file in Studio and this time it did convert it into a translatable file without a problem.
So I guess now the only thing for me to do is to run the pre-translate function.

Use the "Pretranslate files" batch Jan 13, 2011

An interesting case: looks like changing the language only in a part of the document brought the fileds in Word to mismatch and the conversion process to break.

No improvements Jan 13, 2011

Well things are not improving... after running the new file in the TM, I get the same message when I want to generate the target file (fields etc.)
I really don't see what's wrong with it...
And what exactly are "Fields"? Do they mean tags?

So clean source does save as target, but the translation doesn't? Jan 13, 2011

What are fields? Well not that easy to explain. All automated text in Word is field.
For example an automatic generated table of contents is field.
A page number is a field. A reference to another part of text is a field.

You need to run the tag verifier and correct tag errors. You may neither delete a field tag nor move it to another segment.

I did run the Tag verifier, nothing came up...
I need to find a way around it...

Strange, very strange Jan 13, 2011

Please try to save the original Word file as docx and translate again this one.
Sorry, but a remote diagnostics is no further possible.
What you also can do is translating the file always step by step.
I mean translate the first 100 segments and try to save target. If it works, save the file with CTRL+S and translate the next 100 segments, if it works CTRL+S again.
Going this way you will be able to find the affected segment - because in case the file does not save as target anymore you need to close it without saving changes, reopen and then translate the next 50 segments instead of 100, test again - if it works, save the file and translate next 10 segments and so on. I understand this being only a workaround with lots of work, but still better than nothing.
