How do I import existing translations into a translation memory?
Thread poster: nandorj78

Hello,

Good morning!

I've been a freelance translator for over a year now and I've done a great number of translations so far. All of them were done basically without any help from softwares, which took me lots fo time.

Anyway, I've finally purchased trados and I've got a question. Is there a way that I can use all the documents I've already translated and import them into Trado's memory?

Yes, you can Feb 13, 2011

Take a look at chapter 8 of the SDL Trados Studio 2009 Migration Guide (SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio\) and you will see how to do this.

First of all, you have to align your orginal and translated legacy files using WinAlign, part of the Trados 2007 suite supplied with SDL Trados Studio 2009 . The WinAlign guide is at SDL International\T2007_FL\Doc\English.

more doubts Mar 9, 2011

First of all, I'm sorry for taking so long to answer.

Secondly, thanks a lot for your prompt reply.

I've been busy lately and two days ago I finally managed to start working with winalign. Not sure how well, though.

Anyway, some doubts have risen. And I'd appreciate any help.

1) I've worked for many clients so far. So, I decided to create a memory file for each one of them. Is this the standard procedure? Or should I create one huge memory so that I can use with any job?

2) For example, once I've finished creating memory A (with all the translations I've done for client A), how can I update this memory with future jobs from this same client. Or is it an automated process?

I'm sure more doubts will appear any time soon.

Thanks in advance for your help

fernando
