Hi all

I'm using Trados 2009 French version on a Windows 7 64 bit system.

I have inadvertently splilt a source segment in a 200 page translation. Initially I tried doing "Undo", but that didn't work, I just got a blank page for 5 minutes. So I quit Trados and opened it again. When I then tried to merge the two halves back again, following instructions in Trados help, (select the number column of the 2 segments while pressing Ctrl, then right-click and select "Merge Segments"), the Merge Segments option is greyed out.

When I try to continue with the translation, I get an error message in French "Echec de la traduction : La référence d'objet n'est pas définie à une instance d'un objet". Trados Help seems to only be in English, so I am now stuck.

Can somebody help please?
TIA

EIther use undo Mar 22, 2011

or just merge the segment back.
Usually undo should work without any problems.
You can also close the file and discard changes when asked to save it. This will restore the file to what it was on last save.

It gets worse Mar 22, 2011

Since Undo didn't work, and neither did merging the segments, I decided to open the Word source file again and simply retranslate it using the memory.

This worked up to a certain point, but then for some reason the memory stopped translating the segments it had already translated. I now have 12,000 words to translate again apparently!!!

Any ideas?

Are you using exactly same tm as last time? Mar 22, 2011

Did you keep the SDLXLIFF file from previuos attempt?
Import it into the currently used TM.
Make sure, segments that havealready been translated are confirmed.

Is this a beta version? Mar 22, 2011

OK, it seems I've "only" lost 3,000 words or so, a day's work in other words.

Any explanation why this might have happened?
TIA for your help.

SDLXLIFF file Mar 22, 2011

Hi Jerzy

Yes I still have the original SDLXLIFF file, but when I open it I get an error message saying the "data key" cannot be found, apparently because of the split segment, although I do not see why that should cause an error. It is impossible to type any text in the file, and as I said earlier the option to merge the segments back is greyed out. That's why I decided to start again from scratch.

Concerning the pb with the memory not retranslating the file properly, virtually all of the segments were confirmed.

Bye

Why this? Mar 22, 2011

Why beta?
I have not enough information to tell you what happened.
In principle you are the only one to know what happened. Did you confimr the segments as you worked? Can you open the SDLXLIFF from previous translation?
Many reasons for a software crash are possible...

What happens, when importing the SDLXLIFF into a TM? Mar 22, 2011

This should bring an error message, but still import a vast majority of the segments.

Latest news Mar 23, 2011

Hi Jerzy

Re: importing the SDLXLIFF file into the TM: for some reason, when I open the memory in Trados Studio, there is no Import option in the File menu, I have New, Open, Configuration, Servers and Quit, that's all.

Re: Why beta? Because as I explained, when I did undo to cancel the spliltting I obtained a blank window for several minutes. IMHO this is not normal. The document has 45K words but Trados Studio should be able to handle that.

Re: what happened.
i) I split a segment (incidentally only the source segment was splilt, with an a and a b after the column number, the target segment remained unsplit).
ii) I did undo, I got a blank window for several minutes
iii) I closed Trados and opened it again. On opening it I got an error message saying the "data key" was incorrect or something to that effect. From then onwards it was impossible to enter any text in the document. Any attempt to do so produced an error message "Echec de traduction, etc." see my previous message.
iv) I tried to merge the segment, but this was not possible, the "Merge Segments" option was greyed out."
v) I closed Trados and opened the untranslated Word source file again, and tried to retranslate it using the memory. This only worked partially, I have 2 or 3,000 words to translate again. This is not because I didn't confirm the segments, the words in question are grouped in the middle of the translated text.
That's it.
Thanks for your help Jerzy.
Bye

In Translatiom memory view Mar 23, 2011

in the Navigation pane you'll find a list of TMs. Right click the one you wish to import the SDLXLIFF into and chose "Import".
This must be there.
