Dear colleagues,

I would like to create a Translation Memory file from an Excel file (two columns where the first is the original text, the second one is the translated text).

Is that by chance a way to transfer this text in a memory file format in a reasonable short time?

I trust in your expertise about that.. mine is not so much indeed

Thanks a lot in advance
Have a nice day

Manuela
ps. I have already read some posts about that point, but I could not find a proper one, so sorry if already present in the Forum. In case, might you pls provide me with the link?
Thanks a lot

you can use winalign... Jun 15, 2011

Create two txt files (source column and target column of the Excel file) and align them to create the new TM.
There are other ways to go, but as i understand you are familiar with tag editor and trados...

Thanks a lot PROSGR! "Familiar" is a very big word..I do not feel so confident with Trados unfortunately..and to be honest I never used winalign before
So any advise will be useful and appreciated!
Thanks a million
Manuela

TMX format TM? Give me 5 minutes, please! Jun 15, 2011

For TMX format (to import into most CAT applications),I spent 5 minutes for converting Excel file to TMX file (moderate Excel file size).

1. Open Excel file.

2. Save as tab delimited file format. (or use Word to do the same: Unicode txt file).

3. Open SDLX (in T2007 package) and poen TM maintenance program

4. Create a new TM.

5. Import from tab delimited / Word Unicode tabbed txt file.

6. Export as TMX file.

An example Jun 15, 2011

Read the posts (including my post) some hours ago about Winalign and tm.

I am sure aligning or other methods are much easier to follow than this. Still, to make myself better understood here is a little example:

Type this into a new Word file (do not copy/paste):

{0>mother<}100{>mama<0}

Save the file and clean it with TW (select Update TM radiobutton). Mother=mama is in the tm.

Indeed there are dedicated tools, but the one you linked is closed sourced and from an unknown author. I.e. you're placing yourself in the hands of Mr. Andukowicz when using the tool. It may contain a virus, you have no way of knowing.

Hi Adam

Thanks, but I have already tested TM Builder, but I always get the message: IO errore, TMbuilder cannot access the file and/or the folder.

I do not know how to solve this point

dear Soonthon
I followed you steps - actually so easy - but the result is not so good
in the final txt file there is just:

{\fonttbl
{\f1 \fmodern\fprq1 \fcharset0 Courier New;}
{\f2 \fswiss\fprq2 \fcharset0 Arial;}}

{\stylesheet
{\St \s0 {\StN Normal}}
{\St \cs1 {\StB \v\f1\fs24\sub\cf12 }{\StN tw4winMark}}
{\St \cs2 {\StB \cf4\fs40\f1 }{\StN tw4winError}}
{\St \cs3 {\StB \f1\cf11\lang1024 }{\StN tw4winPopup}}
{\St \cs4 {\StB \f1\cf10\lang1024 }{\StN tw4winJump}}
{\St \cs5 {\StB \f1\cf15\lang1024 }{\StN tw4winExternal}}
{\St \cs6 {\StB \f1\cf6\lang1024 }{\StN tw4winInternal}}
{\St \cs7 {\StB \cf2 }{\StN tw4winTerm}}
{\St \cs8 {\StB \f1\cf13\lang1024 }{\StN DO_NOT_TRANSLATE}}}

Dear FarkasAndras
I already read this article..I tried to use ApSIC Xbench.

So from Excel I created a tab delimited txt file. Then I tried to upload it on the ApSIC Xbench, but the display with Target and Source is always empty O.ò?
Thanks

The source and target fields are just search boxes, they are not meant to contain the full content of your file. For a quick check, just type a single letter into the source search box and press enter. You should get a bunch of hits.
To get info on the file(s) imported to Xbench, click Project/Information.
